Donald Trump Jr. and former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort are scheduled to testify before the Senate judiciary committee on July 26, CNN reports. If they accept their invitations to testify, the pair will appear before the panel following Jared Kushner’s testimony on July 24.
The men are expected to testify about their June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer promising “high level and sensitive information” about Hillary Clinton in the midst of the 2016 election season. The meeting came only a few weeks after Donald Trump won the Republican nomination for president of the United States. Trump Jr.’s emails regarding the meeting have intensified the investigation surrounding Russian involvement in the presidential election.
According to Politico, Glenn Simpson, the co-founder of the firm that commissioned the file explaining the president’s Russian connections, will also appear on Trump Jr. and Manafort’s panel. While the president’s son and Manafort are still reviewing their invitations and have yet to confirm their attendance, Kushner is definitely speaking to the Senate.
“[Kushner] has been and is prepared to voluntarily cooperate and provide whatever information he has on the investigations to Congress,” Kushner’s lawyer Abbe Lowell said. “He will continue to cooperate and appreciates the opportunity to assist in putting this matter to rest.”
Officials believe that this hearing would allow an unprecedented level of truth to be revealed. “There has been an enormous amount that has been said publicly but it’s not under oath, which means that people are free to omit matters or lie with relative impunity,” Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a member of the judiciary committee, told CNN.
Both of the Trumps have disregarded criticism of the 2016 meeting, and the president even called the matter “the greatest witch hunt in political history.”
