We Finally Have Our First Look At The ‘Charmed’ Reboot & It’s Perfect for 2018

Buckle up, witches: The Charmed reboot is almost here!

The CW debuted an extended first look at the reboot and like the original WB series, it follows three sisters who find out that they are witches and each possess different powers. Instead of the Halliwells, the new series introduces us to the Veras, played by Melonie Diaz, Sarah Jeffery and Madeleine Mantock.

Mel [Melonie Diaz] is a graduate student and social justice advocate; Maggie [Sarah Jeffrey] is a college freshman and rushing a sorority; and Macy [Madeleine Mantock] is the older sister who was kept secret from Mel and Maggie, and is reunited with her sisters following their mother’s death.

Once the sisters come together, they discover their abilities: Maggie can read people’s minds (and she does this during rush week—as a sorority girl myself, I imagine that would be torture), Mel can freeze time and Macy has telekinetic powers. Later, they find their mother’s Book of Shadows (a staple from the original Charmed) and discover their truth as the Charmed Ones.

Like the ensemble casts on other CW favorites, like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin, Charmed’s casting reflects the world around it, seeing as the show’s three leads are all women of color. The show appears to be taking on strong feminist undertones: Mel monologues during the trailer, “Throughout history, strong women were called witches, and they are. We are.” It looks like those behind the upcoming series were successfully able to adapt it to reflect a much more modern sensibility. Bravo, CW!

No matter how different the Charmed reboot is from its ’90s predecessor, one thing that hasn’t changed is the magical bond between the sisters and the Power of Three. As their mom says, “You’re better together, your differences are your strengths, and nothing is stronger than your sisterhood.”

The Charmed reboot will air on Sundays at 9 p.m. this fall on The CW.
