Ryan Gosling Shows the Trials and Tribulations of Getting to the Moon in ‘First Man’ Trailer

In the new biopic First Man, Ryan Gosling reunites with La La Land director Damien Chazelle to portray Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

According to Universal Pictures, the film tells “the riveting story of NASA’s mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969. A visceral, first-person account, based on the book by James R. Hansen, the movie will explore the sacrifices and the cost—on Armstrong and on the nation—of one of the most dangerous missions in history.”

In the preview for the film, we get to see all the trials and tribulations from behind the scenes as NASA worked to get the very first man on the moon, Vanity Fair reports.

According to Rolling Stone, the trailer shows Gosling’s Armstrong and his fellow astronauts attempting extremely difficult exercises, as well as the harrowing experiences the men endured in order to get to space and fulfill President John F. Kennedy’s goal of getting a man to the moon.

The astronauts also face tough questions from the skeptical press about the mission.

“You’re down here and you look up and you don’t think about it too much, but space exploration changes your perception. It allows you to see things that we should’ve seen a long time ago,” Armstrong (Gosling) tells a reporter.

The trailer ends just as Armstrong and fellow astronauts Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on the moon, moments before Armstrong said his famous words: “small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

First Man also stars The Crown’s Claire Foy as Armstrong’s first wife, Janet Shearon, Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin and Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler and Shea Whigham.

First Man hits theaters on October 12.
