This is the One Major Life Lesson Mary-Kate & Ashley Gave Elizabeth Olsen

When you’re the younger sister of two child stars and are quickly making your way to fame, you can guarantee that you’ll pick up a few valuable life lessons along the way. That was exactly the case for Elizabeth Olsen, who may have made a teeny mistake during the early stages of stardom concerning her private life. Luckily, sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley, who are known to keep to themselves, were there to share a huge piece of advice with their little sis.

Elizabeth, starring in this year’s films Ingrid Goes West and Wind River, recently sat down with Modern Luxury to discuss what she’s learned from her famous twin sisters. Gracing the cover of the September issue, she revealed that “I was not caring what I was saying [in interviews] because I’d assumed no one would read it.”

Of course, in a world where the media can twist and turn every piece of information you share, sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley reminded Elizabeth on how to handle the spotlight and what to share in interviews.

“They’d say, ‘You know, even if you don’t think anyone’s going to read this article, someone might pull the quote later for [something else].’ It’s all part of how you hope someone interprets you, and how they frame who you are and the work you do,” Elizabeth explains. “They’re very tight-lipped – notoriously so.”

And as any person does when presented with a life lesson, Elizabeth took this advice and came to a conclusion of her own.

“I still deal with so many anxieties of how I come across,” Elizabeth tells Modern Luxury. “I’ll go home at night, spinning with a guilt complex of, ‘Did I say something stupid to that person who I respect? Do they think I’m a freak?’ I don’t want to think like that anymore.”

Navigating the world of fame cannot be easy, but we’re glad Elizabeth can count on her older sisters to steer her on the right path, especially when it comes to protecting her privacy.

Amanda graduated from Carthage College with a Bachelor's degree in both Communications and Public Relations. She also proudly served as the Editor in Chief of her college's Her Campus chapter, and as a Her Campus Editorial Intern. She is from Chicago, Illinois, which she can confirm is indeed a windy city. Today she can still be found furiously tapping away at her laptop keys and producing content for the internet. In her spare time she enjoys reading books (before watching their Netflix or movie adaptions), running for fun (yes, it can be fun) and spending time with her friends and family.
