According to reports, Katy Perry has just registered the song title “1984” with her music publisher, BMI. This title is suspiciously similar to the name of Taylor Swift‘s newest album, “1989.” Both names are in reference to the years in which the stars were born – Perry was born in 1984, and Swift in 1989.
“1989” includes the infamous song “Bad Blood.” The angry track was allegedly written in reference to a feud between Swift and Perry. During an interview with Rolling Stone in 2014, Swift said that it was about another female artist, but she wouldn’t name names. “She did something so horrible,” Swift told the magazine. “I was like, ‘Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies.’ And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.” The day after the interview was published, Perry tweeted, “Watch out for the Regina George in sheep’s clothing.”
Swift recently released the highly-publicized music video for her single “Bad Blood,” which stars Selena Gomez as Arsyn. In the video, Gomez wears her hair in a dark brown bob that is reminiscent of Perry’s ‘do.
There is a ton of speculation that “1984” is Perry’s musical retaliation to “Bad Blood.” Is this song what Perry was referring to when she told Billboard, “If somebody is trying to defame my character, you’re going to hear about it,” we wonder? Only time will tell.
