‘Glee’ Producers Discuss How to Deal with Cory Monteith’s Death on the Show

Only the good die young. And Cory Monteith is just another talented young Hollywood star to join the ranks of those who passed before their time.

An autopsy is being conducted today on Cory, whose body was discovered by the staffers at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel in Vancouver, Canada after he missed his checkout time. His death was tragic and unexpected, especially considering that the 31-year-old Glee star had been very open with the public about checking into a rehab facility in late March to deal with the substance abuse problems. Because of the intense public interest surrounding his death, the autopsy has been put on the fast track, with the results expected in 2 to 3 days.

The toxicologists aren’t the only ones scrambling for answers. FOX officials are already discussing how Cory’s death will be dealt with on Glee. It was only two weeks before, after all, that Cory had posed as Finn Hudson with his castmates for Season 5 promotional photos in Los Angeles, with filming scheduled to begin in mid-August.

“Not only has Monteith’s character Finn been part of the show’s most significant romantic relationship opposite Lea Michele’s Rachel, in the fourth season he appeared to be being long-term positioned to eventually assume the role of glee club coach and overall student mentor should Matthew Morrison’s Mr. Shue leave the series,” Hollywood entertainment and pop culture expert Scott Huver explains. “While the Glee staff and especially series creator Ryan Murphy have never shied away form handling controversial, tragic or dark subject matter, translating Monteith’s loss into a ‘death of Finn’ storyline may simply prove to be too sad and all-consuming for the show, but glossing over his absence seems unrealistic.”

No matter the results of the autopsy—or how his death will be contended with on FOX’s hit show—we imagine that Cory Monteith’s untimely death will continued to be mourned by Hollywood and Glee fans alike for some time to come.
