Well, collegiettes, as I’m sure you’ve heard by now Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are splitting. After five years, their marriage is coming to a close and six-year-old Suri is surly the biggest worry on everyone’s mind. In case you haven’t been able to keep up with the tabloids we want to make sure you have the facts.

Last week on June 28th Holmes filed for a divorce, PEOPLE had learned exclusively.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” says Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Holmes has kept a pretty low profile in her NYC apartment where she has been staying with her daughter Suri for this past week. They have been seen shopping at the Whole Foods located right next to their apartment—Holmes is not going to stop living her life because of everything happening right now.

In fact there is speculation that this divorce is happening because she wants to be able to start living her life again. Cruise is big on Scientology and this is the religion that they have been raising Suri with and living their lives with. Holmes is ready to raise her daughter in a different light and she wants to be able to further her career, too. Because of the Scientology religion she hasn’t been able to star in roles that included “sexually compromising scenes.”

Holmes is finally comfortable in the skin that she has grown into and just wants to explore life even further—with Suri solely by her side, of course. She needed to escape this world that she had been wrapped up in and it seems as if this divorce has been in the works for a little while now.

Holmes admitted to Elle in an interview that, “He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years. I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that.” But the issue isn’t even due on stands until July 17th.

We wonder, how long has this divorce been in the works for? Print magazines conduct their interviews in advance so for her to say something like that must mean that this has been on her mind for quite some time. What do you think?
