A ‘Clueless’ Remake Is in the Works

As if! Twenty-three years after the original Clueless became an instant cult classic, the super popular 90s teen comedy is getting a remake. While a lot of details aren’t known at this time, it has been reported that the film is already in early development at Paramount Studios.

Paramount Studios has hired Netflix GLOW writer Marquita Robinson to write the script for the remake, and Girls Trip writer Tracy Oliver to produce, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The original 1995 film directed and written by Amy Heckerling was loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and provided a satirical window into the Beverly Hills high school scene at the time. Alicia Silverstone starred in the lead role of Cher, a Queen bee who is trying to navigate high school relationships by playing matchmaker to her friends and teachers. The movie also put several young actors and actresses onto the map, including Paul Rudd, Breckin Meyer, Jeremy Sisto, Stacey Dash and the late Brittany Murphy.

Paul Rudd played Cher’s former stepbrother, who she ends up developing a crush on, and Stacey Dash portrayed Cher’s best friend, Dionne. Brittany Murphy played the new girl who receives a makeover from Cher.

But perhaps the best part of the classic teen comedy was the catchphrases, like “Ugh, as if!” as well as other famous lines, “You’re a virgin who can’t drive,” and “buggin’.”

This isn’t the first news of Clueless getting a remake, though. A Clueless musical recently made headlines, with Disney Channel star Dove Cameron playing Cher. The off-Broadway music is set to open next month, Deadline reports.

Silverstone recently reprised her role as Cher for an appearance on Lip Sync Battle in June, according to PEOPLE. The actress wore her iconic yellow plaid pleated skirt and matching blazer as she performed Iggy Azalea’s Fancy, which gives a nod to Clueless in the music video.

Emily has also authored political articles for Restless Magazine and numerous inspirational and empowering pieces for Project Wednesday. When she isn't writing, she can be found flying off to her next adventure, attempting new recipes, listening to one of her infinite playlists on Spotify, or cuddling with her dogs.
