Chrissy Teigen is not one to hide her emotions. At the 2015 Golden Globes ceremony, she was caught on camera visibly uncomfortable, a moment that continues to circulate the Internet as a popular reaction GIF. Her now-iconic cringing face returned at the 2016 Academy Awards last night, during that awkward Stacey Dash moment.
Oscar host Chris Rock introduced Dash as “the new director of our minority outreach program.” The Fox News commentator and actress, best known for her role in Clueless, was on stage for a mere 10 seconds as she said, “I can’t wait to help my people. Happy Black History Month.”
The bit was meant to be funny in its irony, as Dash has time and time again failed to be there for “her people.” Amidst the Oscars’ diversity controversy, Dash called the Oscar boycott “ludicrous.” Instead of demanding diversity and equal opportunity for black actors, she instead suggested banning BET, the BET Awards and even Black History Month because they are, according to her, forms of “segregation.”
Dash’s appearance thus made the audience understandably uncomfortable, which explains why there was silence as she left the stage and why Teigen made this face:
Some speculated that Teigen’s cringing reaction was meant for Sarah Silverman’s appearance moments later, but Teigen took to Twitter to clarify: “I was making the face from the Stacey Dash moment ahhhhhhh not Sarah!”
Teigen was not alone in her reaction to Dash: singer The Weeknd was also feeling quite awkward, looking around and covering his face as he laughed.
