5 Ways to Save Your Skin When You Go Too Extra With the Valentine’s Day Makeup

Going all out for your makeup look can be a super exciting part of Valentine’s Day. The full-coverage foundation, glowing highlight, matte lipstick and setting spray – obv, you're going to slay.

When you get home after your eventful day, you may be tempted to just go to sleep with your makeup on, but trust me, that is not going to end well. There are plenty of different ways you can prevent things such as breakouts and dryness after wearing heavy makeup. So if you go a little too extra on Valentine's Day, here's how to restore your skin to a refreshed and healthy state right after.

1. Use wipes to remove the majority of your makeup

It is so important to gently remove your makeup, because pulling and tugging your skin with a wipe can make it feel even more sensitive. Still, makeup wipes are a key way to remove that bulk of foundation and mascara before you use a cleanser. Plus, wipes only take about 30 seconds to work, which is motivating for those of us who like to get to sleep right away!

Some wipes that I love to use to remove a full face are the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths and the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes.

2. Deeply cleanse your skin

This is so essential and should definitely be a part of your skincare routine, especially after heavy makeup. Find a cleanser that’s best suited for your skin type, whether it’s oily, dry or combination.

After you lather your face with the soap, I’d recommend grabbing a tiny face towel, wetting it, and removing the soap from your face with it. This is an easy trick in which you are not splashing water on your face with your hands, and you are also gently removing dirt from your face.

3. Exfoliate to renew skin

Exfoliant is super helpful in terms of cleaning out your pores, scrubbing away dead skin cells, and giving your skin a glow. I use my exfoliator two times a week, but also always do so on the days I wore more makeup so I feel extra clean. For my skin, I love using The Body Shop’s Seaweed Pore-Cleansing Facial Exfoliator and Vitamin C Glow Boosting Microdermabrasion Exfoliating Face Scrub.

4. Detox with a face mask

Everyone loves face masks, and whether you want to clean your skin or simply relax, face masks tend to be a go-to for fast-fix skin concerns. That’s why it is so convenient that this can be a way to get rid of any remnants of your heavy makeup. There are plenty of DIY Face Masks you can make at home with natural ingredients, or you could also buy a pot of your favorite mask to use regularly.

I would recomend a charcoal-based mask to help detox your skin and draw out impurities. Or, if your skin is feeling irritated after heavy makeup, a honey or mint-based mask will feel super soothing.

5. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Just like cleansers, it’s important to find moisturizers that are best for your own skin type. They can help soothe and soften your skin, while removing any tightness after heavy cleansing.

Although applying a glam makeup look on your face can be fun, it’s important to remember that makeup and skincare go hand in hand. Skincare will help your face become a clear base for whenever you want to wear heavy makeup again. Don’t skip it!
