Mary Preston

Hey! My name's Mary Preston and I'm a student at JMU. I'm a communications major with an advocacy concentration and a writing minor, and I've declared a pre-law track. I plan to continue my studies and become a civil rights attorney, working mainly with cases of racial injustice. I've found this is what I'm most passionate about and, consequently, what a majority of my writing is dedicated to, but I recently found a passion for feminist writing as well. Last semester, I took what would end up being my favorite course so far in my undergrad experience: Feminist Blogging. I'd briefly written about women's rights and struggles before, but this class opened my eyes to more feminist topics and made me fall in love with writing about them. I wrote four pieces for JMU's blog ShoutOut!, but I had so many ideas that I never got to use in my time in that class. A friend I met in one of my writing classes this semester pointed me toward Her Campus (after I talked her ear off about how she just NEEDS to take SCOM 301, Feminist Blogging), and I'm very excited to join and get to use the ideas I haven't gotten a chance to!
