Word Art

I'm now in the third week of my Beginning Poetry Workshop, and I have to say that I really love it. The way you can change words into mini-works of art (even beyond the creative nonfiction that I'm used to) is really powerful and just a lot of fun.
Today I had one of my poems workshopped, and it went over pretty well, which is exciting since I haven't written poetry in a while. Our assignment was to write a poem imitating and inspired by one of the poems poet Kristin Naca uses in her book Bird Eating Bird. I chose to imitate her poem "Grocery Shopping With My Girlfriend Who is Not Asian", which is a list poem.
Here's the poem I wrote for today, called Post-Party Refridgerator. Enjoy!

Post-Party Refridgerator

A three month-old, half-empty jar of gluey, gray, seasoning-spotted Ruffles Ranch Dip
Blue, red, and white label almost proud to be an American
But more accurately proud of Frito-Lay,
Which I bought to go with Ritz Chips,
The baked cousin of the famous cracker with
One-third less fat than regular potato chips
But still as greasy, making my fingers slide down the bag’s silver plastic insides
Into a trough of cardboard rectangles thick with salt;
And with Ocean Spray 100% Cranberry Juice because I don’t like the fake stuff,
Preferring my juice crimson and clear like watercolor paint
But without lead or a paintbrush and with antioxidants,
To mix with Smirnoff Green Apple Vodka,
Tart and tangy like the sour apple Blow-Pops I had as a child,
Crunching and clicking my teeth on the green, glassy sugar to get to the gummy pink center,
This time using liquid, 70-proof version to make a drink
That tastes like two different flavors of Jolly Rancher
But I don’t know which ones in particular because they all taste the same.

I'm taking a poetry workshop this semester, too! Maybe we should exchange poems.
