What to Wear to Your Favorite Fall Activities

In case you can’t smell the pumpkin spice lattes or have yet to see colorful leaves on your campus’s quad, autumn is officially here. We collegiettes love this cozy season for a mulitude of reasons: we get to wear snuggly sweaters, sip on delectable picks from Starbucks, and begin our Thanksgiving countdown– it’s never too early, right? Additionally, we love fall because of all the fun activities it brings such as apple picking and carving pumpkins. In fact, we tend to be so excited for these events that we completely forget to plan a sartorially superior ensemble. To avoid committing any fashion faux pas, check out Her Campus’s style guide for our favorite fall events.

1. Cooking and Baking

Though creating yummy goodies in the kitchen is a year-round phenomenon, there’s something about this season that makes our taste buds crave something extra delicious. After all, when else is an appropriate time to use pumpkins, apples, and nutmeg on the daily? Channel your inner homemaker when you are perfecting that pecan pie with a skater skirt and a chambray top. Add extra girly accessories– such as metallic flats and glitzy earrings– and paint your pout a candy apple red. Don’t forget to throw on a super cute apron! Since you don’t want to get your amazing outfit dirty, this finishing touch is both practical and stylish.

2. Pumpkin Carving

As every collegiette knows, carving the best pumpkin is quite the process; however, that doesn’t mean your outfit has to suffer. For a cozy and contempoary ensemble, style a chunky knit with your favorite pair of boyfriend jeans. Instead of sporting a ton of bracelets (they’ll just get covered in pumpkin goo), give your getup an edgy twist with a cool statement necklace. Throw on a pair of preppy lofers, pull your hair into a tight ponytail, and get carving!

3. Hay Riding

Deny it all you want, but you secretly love hay rides– they’re nostalgic and adventurous at the same time. Unleash your inner country girl for this fall festivity with a pair of overalls (they are making a comeback) and cozy sweater. To give this farmer-approved outfit a modern, chic twist, add a strong gold bangle and a forward-thinking pair of slip ons. To avoid looking like you did in your second grade school photo, forgo the braids and pigtails. Instead, straighten your hair with a flatiron and sweep some liquid liner across your upper eyelid.

4. Apple Picking

If you go to school in the Northeast, chances are you and your friends have already planned an apple picking excursion. What could be better than snagging dozens of apples (and obviously eating a few apple cider donuts)? Nothing. Since this event is the epiotme of fall, pull out your most important wardrobe staple of the season: an oversized flannel. Give this grungy print an equestrian twist with some black skinnies and a pair of riding boots. Since you may work up a sweat, layer your tartan top with a thin tee. Last but not least, adorn your wrist with a chunky gold bracelet– you’ll be reaching for apples so much that you’ll be happy you added some eye candy to your wardrobe.

5. Street Fair

Between Oktoberfest and your college town’s annual sidewalk sale, fall is the season of festivals. With a plethora of food vendors and fun crafts, you and your friends make it a point to attend this type of extravaganza. Pay homage to Hedi Slimane’s grungy Saint Laurent collection by sporting a baggy sweater dress and combat boots to this event. Beat the crisp autumn chill with a boyish beanie and opaque tights. With this outfit, we bet you’ll be the most stylish person at the fair.

Which fall fesitivities will you attend this year? More importantly, what will you be wearing? Sound off below!
