With each new school year comes a whole new crop of trends (which makes back-to-school shopping all the more exciting). But completely reinventing your wardrobe each year isn’t practical, particularly when a lot of your clothes from last year are still in style. You can do your wallet a favor by recycling some of those looks while staying trendy at the same time.
To know which of last year’s trends are still good to go and which should retire to the back of your closet, check out Her Campus’s guide to navigating last year’s trends, for this year!
What’s Out
Out: Army Jackets
Last year, the outerwear of choice was olive army-style jackets, and you couldn’t walk into a store without seeing some version of the fall coat. This year, fashion has taken a break from the army jacket and shifted its focus to new coat styles.
But, as celebrity stylist and commentator Colin T. McDonald says, “[The military aesthetic] is a part of our culture and a trend that translates easily from season to season.” So though army jackets are not a key item this season, don’t despair—military-influenced attire rotates in and out of fashion all the time, so these coats will be back in style soon.

Instead Try: Varsity Jackets
Instead of the army coat, this season is all about the varsity jacket. The casual jacket style, seen on the Rag & Bone Fall 2011 runway, looks great as worn by singer Ciara, with skinny jeans and boots.
