This Designer Featured an Entirely Immigrant Cast at NYFW

For the first time ever, a New York Fashion Week collection was presented by an all-immigrant cast. Featuring hijabs in her collection, Anniesa Hasibuan chose to convey a bold message in response to current political issues (namely the Trump administration’s now-defunct travel ban). Her breathtaking designs were modeled by a cast of all first- and second-generation immigrants who wore hijabs with every look.

Hasibuan’s message is all for diversity. She includes as much of that element in her work as she can, hoping to create a “vision and mission of bringing peace, and fashion is one of the means we can use to spread these beautiful values to the world.”

Her collection is powerful in both fashion and purpose. “This show was the opportunity to show that Islam is beautiful,” Hasibuan says. “I believe everyone should be presented with equal opportunities, especially if he or she has passion, talents, and skills, because not all immigrants are ‘bad.’ We’ve proved they are beautiful and a great contribution to the States.”

Anniesa Hasibuan is truly making history with her fresh perspective on style, and I am so on board.
