The Top 5 Fashion DIYs on Pinterest

Summer days are filled with trips to the beach, cookouts with the family, taking road trips and spending hours upon hours on Pinterest, right? Obviously! Around this time of the year, there are so many pictures of DIY fashion floating around that there’s absolutely no way that you can get to see them all, right? WRONG. We’ve narrowed down the top 5 Pinterest fashion DIY’s to keep you up to date with all of the fashionable creativity floating around the Internet.

5. T-shirt revamps

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got dozens of t-shirts piled up in your dresser drawers that you haven’t worn in at least a year. Some probably fit awkwardly, while the ones that used to fit perfectly are now a little too snug. Well don’t worry because Pinterest gives you hundreds (no, seriously. Hundreds.) of ways to revamp your t-shirts and tank tops. Rip/cut the seam on one side of your snug-fitting shirts. Reconnect the two by sewing a strip of lace. Now you’ve got your favorite old t-shirt back that shows just a little more skin.

Another way to revamp old t-shirts is to turn them into beach cover ups. Starting at the bottom of the shirt, cut in a straight line halfway up the shirt. Then, stop about an inch below the chest area. Moving about half an inch over, repeat this process. Continue moving around the shirt until all of the tassels are created. If you’re happy with how it looks, then you’re done! If not, you can connect some of the pieces like in the picture below and create your own unique design.

4. Maxi/High-Low Dresses

Summer is the absolute perfect time for maxi skirts & high-low dresses and apparently everyone on Pinterest feels the same way! Tons of tutorials featuring how to make maxi skirts are popping up on my news feed. As people get more creative, they take their DIY skills to the next level by attempting to make high low skirts. A Pair and A Spare has great tutorials on how to make maxi dresses and high low skirts using old clothes or something you can pick up at a local thrift store!

3. Infinity Scarves

I know what you’re thinking right now: Why would we make scarves during the summer? A lightweight scarf offers a touch of color or print during the summertime without making you sweat, while a thicker, woven scarf keeps your warm during those freezing winter nights. With that being said – there is no going wrong with scarves. However, it’s totally acceptable to abhor fabric shopping (it’s a tricky job that I can’t handle either) but don’t fret: Instructables shows you how to make a stylish scarf from a pair of old pajama pants. Yes…PAJAMA PANTS. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll find yourself overloaded on scarves that will keep you content until next summer.

2. Jewelry

Collar necklaces, bracelets, and even rings have become some of the most popular DIY projects on Pinterest. Surprisingly, most of these projects are quite simple to make and can be done within a couple of hours using the most unusual materials. I’m sure we all remember making friendship bracelets out of yarn when we were in elementary school. Don’t worry – there are tons of tutorials on how to make those bracelets on Pinterest (just in case you need a refresher!). However, did you ever think that you would be using electrical wire to make jewelry? It’s true! And actually kind of easy once you get the hang of it. You can form shapes, spell out words, and pretty much make whatever else you want.

1. High-Waisted Shorts

The number one Pinterest fashion DIY is…high-waisted shorts of course! (You guys had to see this coming.) Not only are there tutorials showing you how to make them from jeans you find at the thrift store, there’s an overload of inspiration if you’re looking to give them some flavor. I’ve seen everything from lace to fabric to studs added to shorts. Although it may seem a little frustrating trying to get the correct length/shape that you want, keep trying! After your second or third pair, you’ll have the hang of it. And, at about three dollars per pair of jeans from a local thrift store, you can afford to practice all summer long.
