My 5 Style Must-Haves: People StyleWatch’s Joiee Thorpe

With temperatures dropping and fall officially here (where did summer go?!), it’s time for us to start putting away our denim cut offs and strappy sandals and trade them in for our warmer—and equally as chic—fall wardrobe!

We were lucky enough to chat with People StyleWatch TV Stylist and Market Editor Joiee Thorpe about her thoughts on this season’s trends and she’s even shared with us her top 5 style-must haves for the season.

As Stylist and Market Editor, Thorpe is the brains behind People StyleWatch’s TV segments. She spends most of her time preparing for fashion segments on TV, whether it be for programs like the Today Show or the View, where she casts models and puts together outfits that not only reflect the season’s trends, but also complement each model’s body type.

Check out her top picks for fall, below!

1. Statement earrings

“For a while I was wearing statement necklaces and bracelets, but now earrings are making a comeback,” Thorpe says. These bold Bauble Bar earrings can completely transform a look, even if you pair them with a basic dress you wear all the time. “It’s not so much that dangly earrings that are in, it’s more ones that pop,” she explains.

2. Cocoon Coat

“I am a huge fan of cocoon jackets,” Thorpe says. “They’re such a big trend for this fall and winter.” Cocoon coats make for the perfect model-off-duty look—they’re oversized and easy, but not sloppy (they’ve got some structure to them). This Rebecca Taylor boucle coat is the perfect combination of cozy and chic: It hits right above the knee, ensuring you’ll stay warm. “The slouchy look is something big that will translate from this season to the next,” she says. “They kind of have a menswear look to them.”

3. Edgy rings

“Rings that look almost like cuffs make a big statement,” she says. “Right now one of my favorite rings is by CC Skye and it is actually a double ring, so it cuffs around two fingers but it doesn’t fully wrap around.” Of-the-moment celebrities like Kendall Jenner, who’ve embraced the edgy look, have been sporting the trend with stacking rings, thick cuff-like rings and chain rings.

4. Statement purses

“Statement t-shirts with big words on them and statement jewelry have been around, but I am seeing this trend translate to little purses and pouches now,” Thorpe says. “They’ll say things like ‘hello goodbye’ or ‘blah blah blah’ in big bold letters.” Think Kate Spade, Edie Parker and Anya Hindmarch, who often feature fun, kitschy sayings on their bags. (Psst: We’re loving this collegiette-friendly tote from H&M!)

5. Trendy oxfords

We’ve seen preppy oxfords with tassels or buckles that come in their normal assortments of dark colors for a while now, but Thorpe says the current must-have item is the embellished oxford. “A trendy oxford is really cool, yet it’ll still be comfortable at the same time,” she explains. “They’re coming with pointed toes, in all different patterns, and in different metallic colors.”
