Dressing Like the Boys: Why Are Menswear-Inspired Shoes So Popular?

Like most collegiettes™, I am obsessed with shoes!  Last week, I wore 6-inch platforms, high-heeled booties, and riding boots. But the shoes that got the most compliments were my simple black oxfords. I was a little surprised that my plainest (and cheapest!) shoes got the most attention, but it also got me thinking why are menswear inspired shoes so popular? Here are a few reasons I’ve come up with…

 1. Comfort
There’s no denying that menswear-inspired shoes, like loafers, are the most comfortable footwear option in fashion land. Between the low heel and snug fit, these shoes offer the same comfort as sneakers without the hideous fashion implications.

2. Sexy, Yet Professional
Depending on where you work or go to school, high-heeled platforms or stiletto booties might ooze a little too much sex appeal. But menswear-inspired heels, like platform oxfords, offer the perfect balance. They add height and confidence (because you know you always feel a little hotter in heels) like traditional platforms, while remaining professional, chic and totally appropriate.

3.     Vintagey Cool
If there is one look that never goes out of style, it’s vintage. Slip-ons and oxfords were worn by beloved style icons, like Katharine Hepburn and are the perfect way to add a touch of retro to your ensemble. Fun patterns, like leopard, will keep this classic shape from looking frumpy or dated.

4. Understated Edginess
If you wear metallic stilettos to a 10am class you might get a few questionable stares. But sport some sparkly slip-ons and you’ll get nothing but looks of envy. This classic shape makes it possible to be a little bold in your color and pattern choices without looking ridiculous.

5. The Power of Celebrity
It’s impossible to deny that our culture is influenced by celebrities, and our fashion choices are no exception. Ashley Greene, Taylor Swift, and Leighton Meester (as Blair Waldorf), are just a few of the stars embracing menswear-inspired shoes.
