The Best and Worst Trends of 2014

As we come closer to 2015, there are few things we love more than looking back on the best and worst trends of the year. Some of them we absolutely loved (pastels!) and some of them we’d rather forget (um, Pharrell’s bucket hat), but 2014 was definitely a fashion year to remember, especially with the glorious return of the ’90s. Check out three of the best and three of the worst fashion trends from this year and place your bets on which will last into the new year!

Best

1. Crop tops with high-waisted skirts (and shorts)

Crop tops have been huge for years now, but 2014 was the year that this casual trend took on an elegant edge. Celebs rocked crop tops with everything from matching shorts and skater skirts to curve-hugging pencil skirts. Emma Stone even showed us that crop tops can be ultra-glam when she paired one with a floor-grazing skirt with a dramatic slit. We’re pretty sure this trend is here to stay!

2. Black and white

Minimalism was everywhere this year, and the red carpet was full of chic black-and-white ensembles. Whether you want to pair simple black pants with a sexy white top, like Emma Watson did, or design an outfit around a black-and-white statement frock à la Diane Kruger, black and white is a foolproof and timeless outfit option.

3. Reworked flannel

The ’90s were back in full force this year, and flannel shirts tied around the hips is one ’90s-inspired trend we were obsessed with. Celebs most often paired their flannels with an all-black ensemble or a denim grunge look, with the flannel adding texture and a pop of color. Bonus: If you get cold, you can throw on your flannel! Fashionable and functional.

Worst

1. Sneaker wedges

Wear sneakers or wear wedges, but please don’t combine them into this monstrosity. We’re not really sure how this trend took off, but we are crossing our fingers that it doesn’t return in 2015. If you’re gonna wear heels, ladies, just commit to wearing heels. And bring Band-Aids.

2. Onesies

We admit that most onesies spotted in 2014 were worn in airports, but come on. If you want to go the comfy route, pair some leggings with an oversized sweater, or, if you must, go for sweatpants and a sweatshirt. Unless you’re snuggled up by the fire in the privacy of your own home, a onesie is unnecessary and, quite frankly, sloppy.

3. Chokers

We already touched on our fondness for the flannel-around-the-waist trend, but chokers are one ’90s staple we didn’t want to see again. It’s not that they’re that hideous; they just look seriously dated and, dare we say it, a little tacky. Not to mention they’re pretty unflattering on most people. Stick with dainty baubles or statement necklaces, collegiettes!

It’s been an amazing year for fashion, and through the highs and lows, there were plenty of trends to talk about. We can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for us (and our wardrobes)!
