10 Important Life Lessons I Learned By 22

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

My birthday is in two weeks and I am extremely excited. Every year I learn a few life lessons, and I want to share what I learned in my 22nd year of living in our wonderful world with you.

Be kind to everyone

You’ve heard it so many times while growing up. There is no reason why we should talk badly about anyone we don’t know. I learned that being nice to strangers gives me good karma. Even if it’s just a simple act of holding the door for someone, the universe felt your kindness and it will go a long way.

Spend time with your family and friends

We really don’t know how long we have on this earth. I lost my aunt last year, and I regret not spending more time with her. But, for the time I did spend with her before she left, I am forever grateful.

Don’t overwork yourself

I have a tendency to stress myself out A LOT. I learned that I need to have care for myself in order to stay relaxed.

Never be afraid to speak out and defend yourself

Your feelings are as important as the other person. It is never okay to hide your emotions inside for a long time. Once you express yourself, you’ll feel much better.

Not everyone is meant to stay in your life

I hate to say it, but it’s true. There were a lot of people I’ve wished could have stayed in my life much longer. But everyone that come and goes teaches you an important lesson.

We don’t deserve to be treated less than what we deserve

No matter what the situation is, or whoever it is with, remember you are worth a billion times more than how they treat you.

Never feel selfish for putting yourself first

I feel bad everytime I do this, but I’ve learned that being selfish, from this point of view, is a good thing. I always used to put others before me, and it got me nowhere. I learned that I have to put myself first even in the worst situations.

It’s good to walk away from the people who are trying their best to make you upset

I understand that this may be a very hard task, but walking away from a heated argument shows your maturity and is better for you emotionally.

Hard work, a little dedication, and a pure heart will take you very far in life

You will become very content with life when you follow this lesson.

Everything will pass

Whatever situation you may be in currently, remember that everything will always pass.

These ten lessons were the most important things I learned while being 22. I am grateful that I get to continue to learn new things in my twenties. Share amongst your friends what you learned during a certain age. It’s always interesting to hear the different life lessons that people around you learned!
