Meet the Riverdale Characters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at YCP chapter.

Riverdale, a remake of the Archie comics, bringing spine-tingling mysteries, murder, and current controversial issues to the small town and to its residence. In this article, I’m going to give my thoughts on this popular series’ characters.

*season 2 spoilers ahead*

Betty Cooper

The typical girl next door, fair skinned, with her tightly drawn ponytail, who has a dark side. Betty’s sense of justice is admirable until “dark Betty” shows her ugly face. I’m still waiting for the series to reveal whether she has a  mental issue. Though, it would be understandable if she does have an underlying illness having been raised by uptight, controlling, spiteful mother and a father who is mostly considered to be spineless. But I root for Betty, hoping her and Jughead Jones are together forever, and gets herself out of the hell hole that is Riverdale.

Veronica Lodge

The rich, popular, attention seeking Latina who wants to redesign herself into being the “good girl.” She wants to be the good girl, yet she will destroy anyone that double-crosses her. She resents her father for the villain he is, but approves when he commits unfavorable actions in her favor. One word for this daddy loving character: Hypocrite. Veronica is struggling to understand right from wrong, but with two manipulating parents who wouldn’t?

Cheryl Blossom

One word: damaged. A girl from a wealthy family with many dark secrets, whose twin brother was murdered, and who unsurprisingly assisted in her father’s death/murder. Every episode she’s featured in I wonder to myself “what is crazy Cheryl going to do this time?” It doesn’t matter who she hurts in the end, she does what she wants with no remorse. And don’t get me started with her odd obsession about her deceased brother Jason; suspected twinsest. Anytime someone breathes, she would scream “well Jason… blah blah blah,” alright, we know! All I can say is that the characters in Riverdale better watch their backs, for Cheryl keeps a lists and she will get her justice.

Archie Andrews

The reamped Troy Bulton, a ginger that loves football, music, and has a heart of gold. Archie is a boy trying to grow up in a confusing town, trying to make the right decisions, but trying to still be a kid as well. After learning of the traumatic murder of his forbidden love, Miss Grundy, and  witnessing his father being shot, he turns from being a lovable young adult to a vengeful, blood lusting vigilante set on finding and ending the black hood. When watching the recent episodes, I think to myself “Archie Andrews, you idiot. You’re asking to die with the stunts you are pulling.” Archie needs to think before he acts, or we might witness the death of Riverdale’s captivating characters.

Jughead Jones

The antisocial, bruting, nonconformist, who I consider my spirit animal. Jug is blunt, and tells it how it is, and he doesn’t want to be dictated by society; I mean just look at his name. Jug is having an identity crisis: to stay the innocent, lovable Jug that his friends adored, or become a serpent–like his father–and finally accept his south side roots; only time time will tell. And I think the entire Riverdale fan-base agrees with me when I say that Jughead and Toni cannot become a thing; we are all praying that Betty and Jughead rekindle their love.  All I can say is that all is good with the world as long as Jughead Jones remains the ever witty, crime solving outcast we know and dearly love.

Riverdale, a show I deeply love and cannot wait to see the development of these amazing characters; as well as the twist and turns of the rest of the season.
