Lets Talk About Tattoos

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WWU chapter.

Whether you’re like me and your mother has all but forbidden you from getting a tattoo, or you already have several, there are some things to know when getting your first (or fifth) tattoo.  I sat down with my friend Liz, proud owner of several tattoos, to talk about tattoos- and what you need to know.

One common issue is being overcharged and taken advantage of, as Liz puts it, “I paid way too much for my second tattoo, and I could’ve avoided that by looking less innocent and unsure”.  Make sure you walk in with confidence, and look like you know what you’re doing.  It also helps to get a price quote beforehand, but Liz warns, “don’t tell them how much you have to spend, because that’s how much you will be charged”

Do your research beforehand- read reviews of the shop and research what you should know about tattoos.  “Ask about blood borne pathogens- has anyone gotten sick, and what their standards are for cleanliness”.  Any legitimate business will be happy to answer your questions to put your mind at ease, and if they avoid the topic, you may want to find somewhere else.  Your safety is a priority- don’t risk an infection or worse and do your research beforehand!

If you want a tattoo, and have done your research to know that you will be getting a good quality at a reputable shop, then go for it!  “It really doesn’t hurt as bad as people say, and once it’s over, the pain stops”, and it will be worth it when you see your tattoo, a lasting piece of artwork.
