Yoga is a form of exercising that has been around for more than 5,000 years and has become extremely popular again within the last decade. A common misconception about this centuries-old practice is that it’s simply “glorified stretching.” But yoga is much more than just stretching and breathing. It requires serious strength, determination and discipline (both mental and physical).
There isn’t just one tried and true form of yoga, either. In fact, there are more than 100 different types of yoga. There is the well-known gentle and meditative form of yoga, as well yoga that serves as a fast-paced, intense workout.
Common routines include Hatha, Iyengar and Bikram. If you want a more relaxing form of yoga, Hatha and Iyengar are perfect because they focus on meditation and breathing. If you prefer something faster and more challenging, Bikram and power yoga will give you the high-intensity workout that you’re craving. There truly is a type of yoga for everyone, regardless of age, personal fitness or level of expertise.
Yoga, regardless of type or intensity, also targets many parts of the body and can provide a full-body workout when performed correctly. Even better, yoga can also help improve flexibility and strength without causing any joint pain (it’s just one of the perks of a low-impact workout). It is also especially beneficial to those who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and arthritis.
If you’re interested in doing yoga, classes are offered at the Wellness Center every Tuesday and Wednesday. Be sure to stop by!
