Fashion Review: A Look at 2012’s Standout Style

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

The year 2012 is over, and there’s no question that it was full of big happenings: some positive, some negative, some exciting, and others just flat-out tragic. A new generation of Apple products was released, Justin & Selena finally split, and Obama was re-elected for a second term. No matter your opinion on these matters, we can all agree that one of the better factors of 2012 was, by far, the bold fashion sense. Designers took great risks with new prints, colors, cuts, and different combinations that seemed to catch on and spread like wildfire, making college girls look trendier than ever. Antonette Velasquez, Wesleyan senior and 2012 Homecoming Queen, quickly familiarized herself with the past year’s trends.

“The fashion throughout the year kept me guessing about what could be paired together,” Velasquez said. “It made me think about how I could fit more things into my style. It also kept me interested in what else was out there. I wanted to explore more malls and online boutiques in search of unique finds.”

So what exactly did we see during the seasons of this ever-changing fashion world? Let’s take a glimpse at the styles that Wesleyan girls rocked over 2012!

Spring: Sophomore Carolyn Snyder’s spirited movements mimicked the zigzag print on her dress. Other notable trends included pleats, bustier tops, chevron prints, lace, one-shoulders, pastel separates, mesh, peplum, and hyper-bright florals.

Summer: Senior Angel Wilson showed off her summer state of mind with a bandeau and crop top. The season was also filled with oversized hats, yellows, golds, mix & match print combos, neons, 20’s style, bright bikinis, feathers, and fringe.

Fall: While hanging out in the quad, freshman Ali Crawford sported contrasting colors and a high-low skirt on a warm day. High-low skirts, faux fur, contrasting colors, reds, comfy sweaters, metallics, and patent leather owned the fall season.

Winter: All was “merry and bright” as Editor-in-Chief Ashley Young wore her cheerful red hat. Winter encompassed oversized coats (especially the belted puffer style), lace-sleeved dresses, bows, scarves, chunky-heeled pumps, and bright hats.

Last year’s fashion took the world by storm. We can’t wait to see what’s new to come as 2013 reveals itself!
