Cupcake Bake-Off for Girls’ Education

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Earlier this week, News Writer Kaila Burch told us about She’s the First’s 3rd Annual Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off. Are you excited? You should be, because it starts tomorrow! Here’s a little bit of what you can expect this upcoming week!

Her Campus WVWC will be selling cupcakes during Aladdin’s normal dinner hours. The sale starts Friday, October 25, and continues through Friday, November 1. Tie-dye cupcakes will be $1.00 each. All proceeds will go to She’s the First!

Since the non-profit began in 2009, they have strove to provide girls in developing nations with a chance to become the first in their families to graduate high school.  Currently, She’s the First is able to support 289 scholars in 11 countries around the world.

For added support, college campuses across the country have their own STF chapters. These chapters actively raise money to sponsor young girls in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Nepal, and Tanzania. By being sponsored, scholars can attend school! Forbes recently noted that it costs between $300 and $1600 to send a girl to school. She’s the First’s cupcake sales and small donations really add up!

It’s been mentioned that there are over 27 million slaves in the world. Sixty-six percent of women and 13 percent of girls fall victim to sex trafficking. Research has shown that the reason many of these women and girls are trafficked is due to a lack of education. Traffickers promise jobs that will help them support their families, and when women and girls agree, they are taken to “work,” trapped, and forced into sex slavery.

By supporting women’s education w She’s the First, we can make a difference and work toward ending trafficking. She’s the First provides young ladies with power in their circle of influence. Through their education, they will know that it’s possible to be more than their circumstances.

You can even pledge to sponsor a young girl through She’s the First. When you do this, you will receive regular updates and pictures of your scholar!

Are you the first in your family to go to college? If so, this cause may be near and dear to your heart. Make a difference in another girl’s life, just like the way someone’s made a difference in yours!

When you buy a cupcake, post a picture on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and tag @HerCampusWVWC and @shesthefirst. Use #BakeAChange! You can also connect with She’s the First on FacebookTwitterTumblr, and YouTube.

Remember to bring $1.00 to dinner! See you there!
