Coming Out Week at West Virginia Wesleyan College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

West Virginia Wesleyan’s campus is an extremely diverse community. The population of the school is comprised of individuals from all over the world—anywhere from Brazil to Ireland. All students have very different interests and hobbies. Wesleyan provides different athletic teams, groups and organizations, and other student life activities that enable individuals to express themselves. This week, Prism, Wesleyan’s LGBT advocacy group, held “Coming Out Week” for individuals to support equal rights.

Prism gives individuals a safe and secure place to discuss sexuality and beliefs. This advocacy group also serves to raise awareness of discrimination and human rights issues that take place in today’s society.

Coming Out Week was filled with activities, and campus sidewalks and bulletin boards were filled with chalk drawings and posters to promote the events that took place. These activities included several services in the Mediation Chapel, such as an interfaith service and even “The Spirituality of Homosexuality” service with guest speaker, Bishop Donagrant McCluney.  Other events this week include tie dying for the Covenant House and the Second Chance Prom. Coming Out Day is tomorrow—Friday, October 11, at 11:00 A.M.—on the Chapel lawn.

Prism encourages individuals to take a stand on a very controversial issue in today’s society. Remember, you or someone you know may be a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender community. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and show support.
