5 Places to Meet New Friends on Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

Last week I talked about a few characteristics of a good friend. This week I’m going to discuss where to find good friends! Perhaps you are here and classes are going well, and you’re settled in, getting used to the dining hall’s food that doesn’t taste like Mom’s home cooking, but you’re not so close with your roommate or have many friends yet. Use today’s blog to help you discover some ways and places to meet new friends.

1. Class
Sometimes the best potential friends are those sitting right next to you! If your MWF class is boring and the professor goes on long, drawn-out rants every day, get together with your classmates and try to figure out what was actually content from the lecture and what was simply useless information. You may find that, between studying and complaining, you start to talk about “the real things” in life and find that you both like the same music and movies!

2. Residence Halls
If you’re a resident on campus: did you know there are at least twenty other potential friends on your floor? That’s just on your floor. Each building has at least two floors that are full of people to meet! Try taking your homework and sitting in the lobby on some days. Get to know your Resident Assistant. They can help you get in contact with different groups of people in the building as well as other groups on campus where you can meet more friendly people!

3. Campus Events
Take a look at the calendars and advertisements posted around your residence halls and campus buildings. Actually read your emo’s! Check sports team schedules. Those documents are full of secret opportunities to meet new people and make new friends.

4. Find a Club!
We’re still in the early stages of clubs for the semester, so now is the prime time to get involved. Try out new activities and pursue interests that you maybe haven’t tried before. Make sure to watch your campus emails and look at flyers because that’s how groups get other people (just like you) involved!

5. Work in the Library!
Do you have homework or something to print? Go check out the library! The first floor is known as the community floor. Group meetings, hang outs, and study halls happen on the first floor.

“You can’t stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes.” —A.A. Milne

Remember that quote from last week?  Take that to heart! Step out of your comfort zone. That’s how I found my group of friends last year! Where have you met your friends on campus? Tell us in the comments below!
