Top Swim Wear Trends of Spring 2011

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Spring break is finally here and summer is so close! Do you have your bikinis for Panama City picked out already or do you still need to find shopping time to pick up the perfect one? Here’s a quick guide to show you what to wear so you sparkle on the beach.

Metallic
While gold and silver are the first things to come to mind when the word metallic is mentioned, don’t forget the other colors have some shimmer in them. Some swimwear designers, such as True Religion, incorporated this trend into 2010’s collection by using metallic hardware to accent their bikinis.

Monokinis and Cute Cutout Details
This season’s trend give girls who feel a little uncomfortable in string bikinis another option: the monokini. The great thing about these one pieces is they offer more comfort to the girl who likes to play in the waves, while still managing to get the cute surfer boy’s attention. Designers like L*Space and Nanette Lepore have great monokinis. If you’re looking for a less expensive, but still sexy, monokini, Victoria’s Secret has some great options.

One piece suits with cutout details is another great option for girls who would prefer not to strut their stuff in a bikini. The website asos.com has a variety of patterns, styles and cutout designs in cool colors. They also offer free shipping, and the suits are pretty reasonably priced to begin with.

Ethnic Prints
This season, many trends in clothing are also trends for swimwear. One of these trends is ethnic prints. A lot of dresses and skirts feature these cool, colorful prints and swimwear is no different! What’s a better place to wear colorful patterns than the beach? If you’re looking to splurge, swimwear designer Paradizia will definitely be a place to look for the perfect impulse buy. However, if you’re like the normal college girl, Victoria’s Secret again has beautiful patterns and feisty animal prints.

Beading, Embellishments, Fringe and Lace
These small details are not only adorable on any swimsuit, but they can also help to take attention from trouble areas and focus on the areas you want to show off. From bikinis covered in sequins to small bead accents, this trend is everywhere.

Similar to clothing hititng stores this month, bikinis and monokinis are all featuring lace inserts and fringe details. The designer Stardust has gorgeous monokinis with flattering fringe detail, and Victoria’s Secret has a variety of styles incorporating bright and colorful laces.

Pin-Up
The fifth trend of the season is the pin-up look. Padded push-up tops, ruffles, polka dots and sweet shades of purple and white are all featured in this season’s swimwear collections. The best place to find this sweet and sex look? Where else but Betsey Johnson!

Whatever swimwear trend you choose (or even if you prefer skinny dipping with the cute surfer), have a fantastic time on spring break and while soaking up the sun this summer!
