An Open Letter to My Mom While I’m Away at College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Dear Mom,

After 18 years of living under the same roof, I’ve finally gone off to college. I never thought the day would actually come that I had to leave you. I’m sorry for not taking advantage of the time we had together at home. I would get home late (even on school nights) then go to straight bed. I would hang out with my friends every weekend, not thinking twice about the fact that in a very short amount of time I would be leaving and wouldn’t get the opportunity to spend as much time with you. Now that I’m away at college I would give anything to be able to go to lunch together or stay up late eating snacks and talking about life.

I’m genuinely thankful that I have someone like you in my life. You’ve taught me so much, about life and about myself. I just want to take the time to thank you for everything you’ve ever done for me. Thank you for taking me shopping (even though I probably didn’t need the things I begged you for). Thank you for taking care of me when I was sick. Thank you for driving me all over God’s creation to go everywhere I needed to go. Thank you for putting up with all my tears and crazy mood swings (I had some rough teenage years). Thank you for everything. I wouldn’t be where I am without you.

Now that I’m at college, I still have so much to thank you for. Thank you for cooking meals for me when I come home for the weekend. Thank you for making my bed and keeping my room clean while I’m gone. Thank you for answering your phone when it’s 10 at night and I’m walking home in the dark by myself or 2 in the afternoon when I don’t know how much water to add to my tomato soup. Thank you for always encouraging me to do my best. Thank you for pushing me to take on this experience, even though you knew I was scares. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I know we don’t talk as much as we did when I was home; I’m so busy at college. But I want you to know that I miss you so much and I call you and text you as much as I can. I will always need you in my life, no matter how old I am. College isn’t going to change that.

You’re not just my mom- you’re my very best friend and I love you with all of my heart.

XOXO,

Your daughter at college
