How to Beat the Turkey Coma

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and you know what that means: friends, family, relaxing, and food. Yes, the glorious meal that is Thanksgiving dinner. After living on fast food and dining hall food, Thanksgiving is a time to indulge and get the most out of a real meal. However, stuffing your face can lead to bloating and drowsiness, and choosing the wrong foods can add extra fat that definitely won’t look good in holiday pictures. As Kim Kardashian once said, “A moment on the lips is a lifetime on the hips.”

Here’s how to beat the turkey coma and fill up on a healthier version of your Thanksgiving feast!

Eat white meat turkey!
By eating white meat, you’re cutting out half the fat that you would be consuming eating dark meat turkey.

Ditch the sweet potato marshmallow casserole and fill up on mashed potatoes!

Homemade mashed potatoes contain loads of Vitamin C and B6 and won’t weigh you down as much as a sticky sweet potato casserole would.

Try homemade cranberry sauce rather than canned!
Canned cranberry sauce contains extra sugars and syrups that you don’t need! Homemade cranberry sauce is tangy and sweet and will hit the spot.

Eat a wheat dinner roll!
Wheat dinner rolls have fewer calories than white rolls, cornbread or biscuits and will taste the same. You know what they say, “The whiter the bread, the sooner your dead!”

Lose the pecan pie, and opt for pumpkin pie!
Pecan pie can have tons of cornstarch in it, while pumpkin pie is lighter and just as delicious. Try it with some low fat Cool Whip topping!

Just by making these few swaps, you could shave off 500 or more calories and 15 or more grams of fat! Keep these tips in mind over the holidays and you’ll be feeling your best after feasting!
