Honest Advice about College for the Start of the New School Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Well WVU, it’s a new school year and the time has come to once again get back into the swing of things. And by “things” I mean going out four or more nights of the week, tailgating until your face falls off (or you just don’t make it into the game), wearing high heels with two feet of snow on the ground, and school, yeah education is important too.

I am sure everyone spent their summer getting off the weight we gained during the year, working our dreaded summer jobs, taking relaxing vacations, maybe you had a summer fling and I am can almost guarantee there was plenty of “Netflix and chill”. But now we are back with our best friends, moved into our new apartments, and slowly and slightly unwillingly getting used to going to class on a daily basis. But as I came back to the good old place I call home, just like I have done the past two years, I realized something. While I was walking up four flights of the stairs to my apartment, I had some time to think and I thought, “Wow, I only have two years left before real life.” REAL LIFE. You know, when you get a real job and make real money, and pay real bills. And then at once, all these thoughts came pouring in that I think everyone should consider:

I’m sure you have heard it a million times, we all have. But college is the BEST time of your life and every person should make the most of it. Any senior will tell you that they wish they could go back to being a freshman. Why? Because what other time in your life are you going to get to live in a town within a mile of all your best friends, with this much alcohol, and this little responsibility? We are all literally living the college dream.

At this point in our lives, there are so many possibilities and things ahead of us. But we are lucky enough to have a four (or more) year period to do anything we want. Sure, we are paying thousands of dollars and most of us will probably be paying this off for a while, but if that’s the case, why aren’t we making every minute count? As I said before, getting an education is important because it sets us up for that “real life” thing. But it is also important to be crazy young adults before we are actually adults. I have learned an incredible amount about myself just from trying new things, meeting new people, and making memories that I might not even actually remember.

We have heard the saying, “College is the time to reinvent yourself.” Well I disagree. College is the time to INVENT yourself. My motto has been through my college career thus far, “If there’s a time to do it, it’s now.” Go out of your comfort zone as much as possible; take a class you would have never thought to take, go on a date with a guy that’s not really your type. On a night that you might to stay in, say “screw it!” and get hammered. Eat like a pig (then run like a maniac at the gym), stay up all night, skip a whole day of class and binge watch Netflix. Do whatever you need to do to make the most of your college experience, because there will never be anything else like it. Welcome back everyone!

I grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. Growing up here I knew there was a possibility of going to West Virginia University my entire life. Although I decided to start my college career at the University of Kentucky, those country roads led me back to WVU in the spring of my sophomore year. This was also the point when I decided to establish myself as a Broadcast Journalist student. Since this point I have strived to become the best possible journalist I can be. I am currently working as a weekend reporter for WDTV-Channel 5 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Prior to receiving this position, I worked as an intern with WCHS-tv/FOX11, in the summer of 2014, where I learned critical editing, interviewing, writing, and speaking skills. I worked closely with anchors, reporters, editors, directors, producers, and even the web team. Aside from the television industry, I am the Campus Correspondent for the West Virginia University Chapter of the online entertainment magazine, Her Campus. Another position I currently hold is the Social Media Chair of WVU’s Radio Television Digital News Association Chapter. In the Fall of 2012, I became a sister of the Alpha Phi Fraternity, in which I held the position of ‘Big Sister Chairman.’ My other passions include horse back riding, scuba diving, being outdoors, and running. I am very adventurous and I try to stay well rounded. My goal in life is to live life to the fullest and be the best possible version of myself. My ultimate goal would be to earn a spot as a reporter/anchor for Fox News, New York. I plan to graduate in December of 2016 and look forward to my future.
