5 Ways Thanksgiving Eve May Be Even Better Than Thanksgiving Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

The moment we’ve all been waiting for – Thanksgiving Break! Whether it’s going right to your favorite Mexican restaurant before you even stop home, countless hours of sleeping in, or being able to reunite with all of your hometown best friends and causing shenanigans once again, a week home is always a great time to take a break from your stresses of a college student and simply relax. Yet, one “holiday” many do not know about does fall during Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving Eve is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving where all 21 year olds go to the local bar and just… celebrate! This is a time where everyone across your city can come together and reminisce on the good ol days and then going to the nearest Eat N Park and ordering the appetizer platter. I am going to give you the top 5 reasons why Thanksgiving Eve is the best holiday for college students.

1. You always have the reminder that your high school ex downgraded.

Seeing your ex when you are home is crucial – you have to look hot, always look like you’re having a blast and simply working it. Even though he might be a future chemical engineer at Harvard and he brought his college girlfriend along, you know he’s secretly dying to come up to you to spark the flames up again. Yet, you then remember why you broke up with him in the first place and pat yourself on the back for how far you’ve come.

2. You are finally on the same level as the cool upperclassmen from your high school.

Remember secretly (or not secretly) swooning over the senior quarterback when you were a little freshman? Now it is your time to shine and talk to all the older people that you looked up to for so long. Suddenly, when you graduate high school, everyone is on the same level. Use this to your advantage and flirt it up for some free beverages from the state football champions.

3. Your friends’ parents always make an appearance.

Wait… we are allowed to have fun with our parents now?! Thanksgiving Eve is a prime time for your friends’ parents to join the fun. Whether it is dancing along with the live band or telling them about the times you all snuck out of their house, it is one of the best bonding experiences with your second families.

4. Thanksgiving Dinner is exactly what you’ll need after a night on the town.

Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, oh my! Having a big feast the next day is the perfect ending to the perfect night. The re-up of getting a hot meal in your system will allow you to get rid of your head-ache, have a blast with your family and get ready for a night of shopping for Black Friday.

5. It’s the return of the classic pre-going out get together in your parent’s basement.

Ah… the good ol’ smell of the classic vanilla Yankee Candles mixed with the Italian meatballs cooked that day. It’s always a good reminder on how much your friends’ houses were like your own growing up. Before going to the local bar, it is always a time to invite everyone over to get ready, dance to Fetty Wap and hydrate before hitting the town. Whether you mean to or not, you always talk about how much growing up in your hometown was a blessing in disguise.

I grew up in Charleston, West Virginia. Growing up here I knew there was a possibility of going to West Virginia University my entire life. Although I decided to start my college career at the University of Kentucky, those country roads led me back to WVU in the spring of my sophomore year. This was also the point when I decided to establish myself as a Broadcast Journalist student. Since this point I have strived to become the best possible journalist I can be. I am currently working as a weekend reporter for WDTV-Channel 5 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. Prior to receiving this position, I worked as an intern with WCHS-tv/FOX11, in the summer of 2014, where I learned critical editing, interviewing, writing, and speaking skills. I worked closely with anchors, reporters, editors, directors, producers, and even the web team. Aside from the television industry, I am the Campus Correspondent for the West Virginia University Chapter of the online entertainment magazine, Her Campus. Another position I currently hold is the Social Media Chair of WVU’s Radio Television Digital News Association Chapter. In the Fall of 2012, I became a sister of the Alpha Phi Fraternity, in which I held the position of ‘Big Sister Chairman.’ My other passions include horse back riding, scuba diving, being outdoors, and running. I am very adventurous and I try to stay well rounded. My goal in life is to live life to the fullest and be the best possible version of myself. My ultimate goal would be to earn a spot as a reporter/anchor for Fox News, New York. I plan to graduate in December of 2016 and look forward to my future.
