Deciding what to be for Halloween can be the hardest thing you do all semester.  Especially being in college, you need a different costume for every night of the weekend. Buying multiple costumes can become expensive, so DIY is the way to go.

Here are 5 DIY’s that you could be this year:

1. Unicorn

This cute, mystical costume can be made easily with some tulle, felt, and other materials you probably already have.  It’s one of the more time consuming costumes to make, but it’s definitely worth the time.

First start with the horn. You’ll need a headband, cardboard, white felt, oven-bake clay, and sparkly pink paper. If you have a white headband you can skip this part, but if not get your felt and cover your headband with it. Once you’ve done that make the ears out of cardboard and cover those in felt. Next, get your oven bake clay and roll it up to make the horn. Follow the baking instructions and then glue it on your headband. Add a bit of pink paper to the inside of the ears and then glue them on top of the headband.

Next start the tutu. This part is the easiest, but most time consuming part. All you need is elastic for the waistband and 4 or 5 colors tulle and about 3 yards of each. Measure the elastic around your waist and tie it where you think is comfortable. Next, cut the strips of the tulle about one-inch-thick and 8 inches long. Pick 3 or 4 strips of tulle and tie them to the elastic, this helps to make the tutu thicker. It may take some time but continue this until the skirt is finished.

The make-up for this costume can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. Just throw on a white shirt and some black shoes and your unicorn costume is complete.

2. Alien

For you ladies that aren’t that artistic, this costume is for you, because it requires no crafting. You might even already have the outfit in your closet. All you need is a pair of colorful, metallic leggings, a white top and a pair of converse.

The make-up for this costume can really make or break the look. Go all out, the more futuristic, the better. You know you have those eye shadows you never use, so break them out for the night Add some gems and space buns in your hair to finish off this look.

3. Deer

This is a classic DIY costume, but always a good one. All you need do to is make the antlers to turn yourself into a deer. You need a brown headband, light and dark brown felt and some fake branches. Make the branches into antlers and glue those into the middle of the headband. With the dark brown felt fold the into ears and add the light brown felt to the inner part of the main part of the ears. Add a little bit of faux-fur to the headband for a little extra flair.

This costume relies a lot on make-up to give the full effect of a deer. One tip is to contour, contour, contour. To make your facial features look like deer you really need to redefine your face. So, start with contouring areas that you already would contour such as your cheeks, forehead and nose, but just over exaggerate it. Once you’ve done this, you should look like your favorite forest creature.

4. Barbie

I personally love this costume, because who doesn’t want to wear leggings and sneakers for a night out.  With only colorful leggings, a leotard, and leg warmers you can transform yourself into a retro workout Barbie. All you have to do is paint “Barbie” onto the leotard and your ready to go. Curl and tease your hair and add some bubble gum pink lipstick on to channel your inner Barbie.

5. Scarecrow

Overalls and a flannel should be two things you already own, so your ready to be a scarecrow this Halloween. Draw some stitching and patches on your face, and make your cheeks extra rosy.  The rest of the make-up for this costume can be minimal, but pigtails and a straw hat will pull the rest of this costume together.

Whether your DIYing this year to save money or because you think they’re cuter than store bought costumes, there are endless options of DIY costumes. Your imagination is the limit, but Pinterest is truly limitless.
