MTV VMA’s Top 5 Highlights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Every minute of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards was jam packed with excitement and surprises. With so many exciting performances, celebrities, and awards it was hard to look away! Here are Her Campus WPUNJ’s top 5 highlights of the show!

  1. Lady Gaga’s “Applause”

Lady Gaga showed the world she was back and better than ever, after taking a year hiatus because of a broken hip. She went through four on-stage “Gaga-worthy” outfit changes during her performance of her new single, “Applause.”

  1. Taylor Swift Bad-Mouthing One Direction

Everyone knows Taylor Swift has a bad rep for talking smack about her exes in her chart topping hits, but during the awards she may have gone a little too far. While One Direction was on stage accepting an award, the camera shot to Taylor as she cussed at her ex-boyfriend, Harry Styles. Perhaps she should’ve realized the cameras are always watching!

  1. Miley Cyrus’ Twerking

We were both shocked and confused by Miley’s video for “We Can’t Stop,” and I think it’s safe to say we were equally shocked by her performance! Witnessing her “twerking” on the married Robin Thicke in a plastic bikini and getting naughty with a foam finger, it’s clear that Miss Cyrus wants everyone to know she’s left behind her former Disney identity, Hannah Montana.

  1. ‘Nsync Reunion

As if JT’s performance wasn’t amazing enough – a full 15 minutes long – he was joined by his former ‘Nsync band mates on stage! Although they weren’t on for very long, I think we all can agree that it was an incredible surprise. Timberlake also won Best Video of the Year and the Vanguard Award.

  1. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ Equality Anthem

I’m sure I’m not the only one who got choked up during this performance! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed “Same Love”, making it both emotional and empowering, with special guest Jennifer Hudson!
