If Life was a John Hughes Movie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Hey collegiettes! So the other day I was sitting around, obsessing over my GPA, when a thought crossed my mind: “Why can’t my life be like a John Hughes movie?” Wouldn’t that be awesome?!?! I then dropped my textbook and started compiling this list:

1)         We all would have awesome friends who totally get us.

Growing up I thought that the way the kids in The Breakfast Club were was how friendships were supposed to be.

2)         Musical Numbers would be a MUST.

Have you ever watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and thought, “Wow, for never meeting each other, this group of people sure has this choreography down pat!” I would lose it if I broke out into song and everyone around me just went with it! Don’t you think? Flash mob anyone?

3)         Nerdy girls would end up with the popular guy. Every. Time.

You know how, in Pretty in Pink, Andie (played by Molly Ringwald aka The Queen of the 80’s) is a social outcast who wins the heart of rich, bad-boy Blane (played by Andrew McCarthy)? Well, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not but that just doesn’t happen. In a perfect John Hughes world, no one would be left out. Netflix and Chill for all!

4)         Our wardrobes would be on point.

Where can I file my official petition to bring back suede fringe jacks and acid wash jean shorts? In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Mia Sara, who played Sloane, should be crowned the Queen of fringe because she slayed every outfit the fashion department threw her way.

5)         We’d marry rich.

If only we could be so lucky to marry a rich senator like Jennifer Lopez’s character in Maid in Manhattan. Bye-Bye student loans! Hello Rodeo Drive shopping trips!

6)         PUPPIES!

Now, before doing research for this movie, I didn’t even know that John Hughes wrote the masterpiece that is 101 Dalmatians, but apparently his expertise surpasses my wildest dreams. Imagine if we were surrounded by 101 puppies 24/7? HEAVEN!

7)         Everyone would understand sarcasm.

Planes, Trains, & Automobiles is, honestly, my life. Well, let’s clarify that. My life is like the annoyingly-talkative and overtly-sarcastic life of Del Griffith (played by John Candy).

8)         Family road trips would be so much more eventful!

I don’t know about you, but my family road trips involve sleeping, an occasional pit stop, and the overwhelming sense of tensions mounting. The road trip in National Lampoon’s Vacation makes me super jealous (minus the dead Aunt).

All in all, life would be pretty awesome if the great John Hughes wrote the script, but life is pretty good as it is. Everyone wants a perfect life complete with best friends and an amazing relationship, but if we all had those perfect lives, would we be satisfied? Our society is made up in such a way that we always crave what others have, but once we attain it we move on to the next great thing. So while I wouldn’t mind living the “perfect” life, I like the fact that I’m uniquely me, and wouldn’t change that for the world! Hope you feel the same! HXCO
