In our last installment of our Holiday segment, we have Funky February Holidays. Read on to see what kinds of wacky holidays you can look forward to this month!

National Freedom Day – National Freedom Day is observed by the United States of America to commemorate the signing of the 13th amendment. The 13th amendment abolished slavery in the United States officially with the signing from President Abraham Lincoln

Groundhog Day – Groundhog Day is based on an old wives’ tale that a groundhog can determine whether or not the winter season will last 6 more weeks. This year little Punxsutawney Phil has decided we will have more winter!

The Day the Music Died – This day is named the Day the Music died, labeled by the song “American Pie” by Don McLean, after a plane crash in 1959. The plane crash killed musicians Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper. Rest in peace, boys.

Thank a Mailman Day – Mailmen often are underrepresented, especially now that technology has become our primary means of communication. Still, you wouldn’t be able to shop online without those Mailmen! So thank your mailman (or mailwoman) when they stop by today.

National Weatherman’s Day – Much like Mailmen, Weathermen don’t get their fair share of appreciation. Sure, they’re wrong sometimes. (That 78 degree weather just magically turned into 5 inches of snow, we swear!) But like it or not, we’d be completely clueless without them.

Lame Duck Day – Honestly? We don’t even know…

Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony – The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony begins today. That means from now until the 23rd all you’ll hear about is snow, Sochi, and sports.

Boy Scout Day – Go, Boy Scouts! February 8th celebrates the birthday of scouting, founded in 1910.

Toothache Day – I don’t know why anyone would want to celebrate having a toothache, let’s be honest. So maybe, brush your teeth an extra time today and celebrate the lack of toothache!

Umbrella Day – Umbrella Day! From the looks of it, you might not need an umbrella today. Nonetheless, celebrate the genius invention that keeps millions of us dry.

Make a Friend Day – Anytime is a good time to make a friend, but sometimes we all need to be reminded that it’s not weird to start up a conversation while waiting in line for coffee. Today is as good as any day to make a new friend, maybe even a new best friend.

Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday – Abe Lincoln was a fantastic man, so great that he was designated to be the face for the 5-dollar bill and the penny! He was also quite a trendsetter, too, with his cane, facial hair, and fancy top hat. We haven’t even gotten started on all the political things he’s done. HAPPY 205th BIRTHDAY, ABE!

Get a Different Name Day – Has anyone ever gotten tired of his or her own name? I know I’ve been frustrated with mine recently. No one can ever spell it right. Luckily, I can trade it in for a new one without all the hassle, at least temporarily.

Valentine’s Day – Everyone knows Valentine’s Day was created by the card companies to increase sales. Regardless, it’s nice to be able to have a day to show that special someone you care (even though you should be doing it all the time). And if you don’t have someone to share Valentine’s Day with, there is no shame in getting your parents or roomie some chocolates and a card!

Singles Awareness Day – Following Valentine’s Day, Singles Awareness Day was no doubt made in retaliation of the love-drunk. Singles, you’re in luck! All the chocolate is half off!

Do a Grouch a Favor Day – In the midst of winter, it’s an easy task to be a grouch, and it can be a lot of fun, too. Still, no one really wants to be a grouch. So go out and do your favorite grouch a favor. You might be happy you did.

President’s Day – Always celebrated on the third Monday in February, we have President’s Day. Woo! Originally in honor of George Washington’s birthday, President’s Day was created to honor those who have taken the lead for our country.

National Battery Day – Why is there a day for batteries? No, really; why?

National Chocolate Mint Day – Chocolate and Mint: A combination almost as good as chocolate and peanut butter. Man, February is all about chocolate and politics. Even still, go stock up on chocolate and mint flavored things. They’re so yummy!

Love Your Pet Day – Snuggle with your furry pal a little bit today (unless it’s a porcupine)! Don’t worry about the pet hair you might get all over you. Fur is a current trend anyway.

George Washington’s Birthday – Old George turns 282 this year. Washington is credited for being the first president of the United States and for being an all-around awesome guy. Thanks, George, for all you’ve done. Happy birthday.

Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony – The Olympics are finally over. Did your country and favorite athletes get the gold medals you were hoping for?

National Tortilla Chip Day – Tortilla chips are seriously the best things that have ever been created. And whoever thought of combining them with salsa or queso should get an award; hands down.

Pistol Patent Day – Pistol Patent day? Really? February is really a strange month.

National Pistachio Day – It’s so nutty! Get it?! Pistachios are one of the greatest nuts ever. Hidden beneath the tanned shell, the little green capsules of yummy are bursting with nutrients. Buy a bag from ShopRite and enjoy a healthy snack today!

Polar Bear Day – SAVE THE POLAR BEARS. I mean… ahem. Those little furry guys are having so much trouble with Global Warming and such. Go help them out at World Wildlife Foundation. You can “adopt” one, and even get a cute little plushie.

National Tooth Fairy Day – Everyone knows the tooth fairy was the coolest. Still to this day, I marvel at the idea of her (or him – we don’t judge).

That’s it! It’s been a real blast writing these articles every month, but I’m glad it’s over. There are a lot of days in the year! I hope you guys have had as much fun with these holidays as I’ve had!

Once again, we’d like to thank Holiday Insights for helping up compile a list of holidays for every day of February.
