Why Getting a Pet is the Best Thing to Happen to Me This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WMU chapter.

I bought my dog, Onyx, the Saturday after spring semester ended last year. He cost me $300, and he was the best decision I ever made.

Onyx is an Australian Shepherd- Blue Heeler mix, and when he came into my possession he was just recently 10 weeks old. He was smaller than the picture showed him, so when I held him the first time I felt like I was holding something precious- and I was.

Now here I am, 9 months later, and I love him more than ever. I look forward to seeing him when I get home, and I can’t wait to cuddle with him after I get out of work. He finally grew into his ears- they were SO big on his little head- and next month we’re celebrating his first birthday!

I think getting Onyx helped me with my anxiety. I can’t just throw him across the room when he’s being naughty. Especially when he was a puppy, he would pee and poop everywhere. He helped me learn how to put my emotions in check.

He also is a physical support for when I need someone, but there’s no one around. You have a whole life outside of your dog, but they just have you. Be there for them and show them that you’ll always care.

He’s also mine. I love being able to show off my dog to people I know and telling them all about what he does. I brag about him on all of my social media, and I act as if he’s my kid.

In short, I think if you get a pet you’ll also be really happy, too. Onyx makes me look forward to the day, because he looks forward to seeing me.
