Some Advice for Valentine's Day 2010
It’s that time of year again. It’s Valentine’s Day, cue the foreboding music.

Valentine’s Day started January 2nd 2010, much like Christmas starts the day after Halloween. You walk into Meijer and all the candy, and valentines are out, punishingly pink. This means you have over a month to think about the upcoming holiday and either be adequately depressed from being single on the 14th or have your hopes desperately high to see what your boyfriend will come up with.
If you are unlucky enough to be single on Valentine’s Day just remember it’s not the end of the world. I was all geared up for VDay last year and the guy dumped me three days before! And here I am telling you about it today, I didn’t drown my sorrows in chocolate (well maybe a little) and I certainly didn’t let it get the best of me because now a year later I’m with a great guy and have no immediate plans for making last year a repeat performance.
Valentine’s Day is on a Sunday this year so you’re lucky enough to be able to stay in (if you want) and have a lazy day on the couch fuzzy bunny slippers and all. If you’re feeling more motivated go to the mall take part in some retail therapy (I hear floral is in!) or get something to eat with some girlfriends, after all today is not the day to fly solo at a restaurant.
Avoid cable television for the day though unless you’re in the mood to want to gouge your eyes out with those pink candy hearts. The day is dedicated to couples in love to a nauseating extent that no single lady needs to see it. Remember, being single only sucks on VDay then you can move one with the rest of the year.
On the flip side, if you’re in a relationship, be kind to your single friends, this is a day of grieving for them whether they want to or not.
First off, if your boyfriend doesn’t come up with an amazing date which includes a four star restaurant, dessert, flowers, chocolates, and a show don’t be too disappointed. We are college students after all on a limited budget.
Don’t make all the planning his responsibility either. Talk to him and figure out if you are going out and pick a place where you haven’t gone before. So even if your date isn’t expensive or a romantic get-away for two; you’ll get out of your usual environment and experiencing something new.
If you have decided to exchange gifts to one another keep it to the less expensive side. My boyfriend has a thing for the candy hearts (he has already gone through at least six bags) so I’m picking him up some of those, inexpensive and appreciated.
A six pack of beer is always always always a good gift for a guy; after all we all know that they really don’t want boxers with hearts on them. Pick them up some of their favorite beer and they will love it, guaranteed.
So whether or not you’re single or in a relationship this year you will survive this day to make it to the next Valentine’s Day. Just remember I was single last year and now I’m writing the dating column.
