It's Not All About Age

By Sara Czarnecki
February 27, 2013 - 1:20pm

Age is an interesting conceptin college. You are surrounded by people who range from new high school graduates, naive to the world, to mid-thirty-somethings with a family of their own. Everyone is convinced that our age and the level of success we have in our lives should match up. It’s a tough stereotype to break.   It isn’t hard to convince ourselves that people view us differently due to our age because it’s true. College-going as a theory creates a warped view of what is considered ‘young’ and ‘old’ within the minds of our family and friends.  For that matter, age also contributes to what people think about our current success level.   READ MORE

Better People, Better World

By Jessica Rico
February 10, 2013 - 4:17pm

When was the last time you did something nice for someone else? I'm talking something out of the ordinary for the sole benefit of another person? If you can't even remember, that might be a problem. If it was a couple days ago, that’s good. If it was just yesterday, awesome. But ask yourself this; was it really for someone else? Or did it benefit you jusssst a little? Was it because you felt bad or guilty? Or was it because you thought you might "look bad" if you didn't?    If you answered yes to any of those last questions, then your good deed doesn't really count. It may have been a nice thing you did, and I'm sure it was, but it doesn't mean that you had another person’s benefit in mind.    READ MORE...

I'll Say it: In Defense of Religion

By Sara Czarnecki
February 5, 2013 - 8:51pm

One of the phrases heard all too often is, “I know it sounds stupid, but I started going to church.”  And almost always I have a very confused look on my face; what’s stupid about going to church?  And how would someone respond to that? “Oh yeah, that is totally stupid that you find comfort in some type of higher being.”   What is ‘stupid’ about being a college student who wants to find a sense of faith, or if you’re a college student who doesn’t want to believe in faith at all?  There’s nothing stupid about finding comfort in something that others don’t.  People find comfort or a sense of Zen in many different ways, all of which might seem out of the ordinary, but never stupid.   READ MORE

Keep that New Year's Resolution

By Hannah Ball
February 4, 2013 - 10:02pm

Making a New Year’s resolution to get in shape is easy. Sticking to that resolution is the hard part. In a college atmosphere where there’s always a meeting to attend, a cool event to check out, friends to see, and homework that demands attention, it’s hard to squeeze an hour in at the Recreation Center. The motivation we had at the beginning of the year disappears and we tell ourselves ‘I’ll do it next year.’ Kill that thought and don’t give up hope! Even if you want to lose 10 lbs. or 100 lbs., postponing a healthier lifestyle not only hurts you more in the long run. And surprisingly, it’s not that hard. READ MORE
