Celebrate Earth Day

By Dina Khalil
April 17, 2011 - 7:36pm

Every day, we consume our entire lives. Every morning, we wake up to the cell phone alarm clock, take 10-minute showers, microwave a Hot Pocket, drive across the street for class, and sometimes leave a straightener on for 12 hours. We rely on electricity, gasoline, and factories, just as much as water, food, and human connection. Just one day out of the year reserves itself for humankind to unplug and preserve the planet: April 22nd, Earth Day.

Playoff beards: to shave or not to shave

By Jamie Gizzarelli
April 17, 2011 - 7:15pm

Well, once again it is that time of year: hockey playoff season. Men and some women thrive on this proclaimed season if you haven’t already guessed from the constant updates via Twitter and Facebook. For those Red Wing fans, like me, it is another chance for us to prove that Detroit is the one and only place known as Hockeytown and not Hawkeytown for you Blackhawk fans. I’ll most likely get some slack from that last statement from my Illinois friends, but last I checked we go to school in Michigan. READ MORE

Shutdown Averted

By Katelyn Kivel
April 11, 2011 - 11:22am

Friday, 8 April 2011, the Congress settled on a budget. President Obama described this budget as the “largest annual spending cut in our history”. He also said that this budget means that the Washington Monument was not closing down on 9 April. Like many Political Science students I’ve been following the budget issues that threatened to shut down the federal government. And like many Political Science students precisely two things crossed my mind: first, I remembered the episode of West Wing about federal government shutdowns, and second, well, I freaked out a little. Top Movies to See This Summer

By Dina Khalil
April 10, 2011 - 9:23pm

Since 1896, movie theaters have been curing boredom (Chavis, Jason). No matter what age you are, or what kind of mood strikes you, the movie theater never fails to entertain. A place for romantic dates, a girls night out, or a babysitter’s savior; your local movie theater is your friend. Overpriced popcorn, candy, and Slurpees make our duffle-bag-sized purses seem useful (wink, wink). When absolutely nothing sounds appealing, and everyone fends for the bar to drown their sorrows, movie theaters provide good, clean fun! Movie theaters in the summertime always feed our routine lives with hot blockbuster hits.

Summer Sizzles in Kalamazoo

By Dina Khalil
April 4, 2011 - 5:28pm

In 2011, Western Michigan University students hold the privilege of enduring a summer, which starts no later than Friday, April 29th, and fall classes begin Monday, September 5th. Some students may go home during summer months to spend more time with the family. The students stuck in the hometown usually get a smalltime job, but some just bum around the house all day to enjoy a temporary lack of responsibility for once. Others hang around for the summer to catch up with credit hours or internship opportunities. College towns will never be completely dead in the summer. Students stay in town for reasons outside of academics. READ MORE

Drink Up (with Tea)

By Melanie Ellsworth
April 2, 2011 - 3:52pm

When brainstorming over a cup of tea as to what I could write for this week’s article I ran into what many know as “writer’s block.” Coincidentally, my editor sent me a text and suggested I write about one of my great loves, tea. Immediately, as I poured myself another cup of delicious mint tea with cocoa, I knew it was a great idea. Besides what one might do to succeed in this final month of the spring semester--study, exercise, and eat right-- drinking right should very well be on the top of the list of things to do to keep your brain and body refreshed and energized. Now we aren’t talking about the ever important drink of water, or the occasional glass of red wine, we’re jumping right into the topic of tea. READ MORE...

At 9:15am on 3/22/11 associate vice president for community outreach, Bob Miller welcomed the press and then Western Michigan University President John Dunn to the WMU College of Health and Human Services. It was here where the announcement for “Operation Historic Moment” took place. WMU President John Dunn stated, “I’m enormously pleased to be able to make an announcement, the likes of which has been made by very few colleges or universities in this nation. Many universities identified in National rankings as the very “best of the best”… Harvard, Yale, Princeton have never been able to share news of this magnitude with their constituents” (Mlive.com). “O Yah Overly Used Sayings, Yah”

By Jamie Gizzarelli
March 28, 2011 - 3:07pm

Missed an episode of Jersey Shore and all of a sudden you felt light years behind in 21st century lingo? Hash mark guido sayings are instantly trending via Twitter? Well, I for one, never personally watched Jersey Shore, so when waiting for Big Daddy Taxi to pick me up and overly drunk college students scream “Cabsss are hereeee,” left me completely and utterly confused.
