Learn Something New Every Day: Best Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WMU chapter.

In order to keep your sanity, it is important to have all kinds of friends. Goofy ones, serious ones, mean ones, nice ones… you know, a good, diverse population. I believe you should have friends in all the right AND wrong places. Usually people suggest keeping only positive people in your life, but I also think you need to have (at least) one friend who’s a little….um…out there. Keeps you young, happy, wild and free!

Think about who keeps you going. Here are my top 3:

Number Three: The “Resource Friend”
They are your guide to life. This is your friend that is available to help you whenever you need it. They always seem to know everything about anything. I always have really weird and random questions to ask this person. Sometimes it’s necessary to text them during the day just to inquire about some trivia. I usually text him about stuff that pertains to things I know he’s wayyyyy more versed in, but we also have in common. You may not even hang out with this person very often, but you talk pretty frequently (because you’re an inquisitive girl!).

Number Two: The “Work Friend”
Not only is it awkward enough to start a new job, but with every new job comes new friends. At my newest job, which I have been at for about 6 months, I’ve been going through a few “work friends”. It was one girl first, then another, and then finally a set of girls really took me under their wing and we have been pretty tight since. (shoutout to Brittany and Kate!) This friendship is the most odd to me, but also completely necessary. Who else can you go on and on and on about how much you hate your job?

Nobody else except a friend at work! “what are you doing after work?”, “when do you work next?”, “are you closing tonight?” are pretty much your conversations, along with whatever weird topic you found to have in common. With all the time I spend at work, I’m going to need a person to attach to and be good friends with, and I LOVE hanging out with these people after work! I enjoy work parties, dinner parties, and coffee dates with my fellow employees!

Number One: The “Boy Friend”
He’s not your boyfriend, he’s your boy friend. Your best guy friend. He’s always there for you and is like your brother. He’s more than just my friend, he’s my best friend; always has been. Danny and I have known each other since the 5th grade. Its safe to say that he knows EVERYTHING about me, always will. I cant really foresee a life where I don’t keep in contact with him.

It actually frightens me to think about the future because I know it’s “socially unacceptable” to have one-on-one dates with him, specifically if I’m in a relationship. As I plan on moving to NYC, it will be even harder to keep the friendship up, but I need him (and part of me knows he needs me too). This relationship is pretty powerful, and I’m sure you’ve heard all of the claims of male best friends before, but I really suggest a close male relationship that isn’t sexual for every female. It really teaches you about yourself.

I hope you think about your close friends and see what else you come up with.
Now go find your friends you’ll want to keep forever!

Until next time!
-Alyssa
