Collegiette Movie Review: This Means War

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WMU chapter.

Spring Break is almost here! One more week and we Broncos will be ready to buck the homework and class schedule and do something fun for a change. I decided to get a head start and check out a movie at our local Celebration Cinema, and share some thoughts so you can decide if it would be a good choice for a date night, girl’s night, or just movie night on the town by yourself (best odds of getting to pick the movie).

I’m not a fan of horror and I get dragged to “guy movies” often enough (Battle Los Angeles, anyone?), so I was happy to find that the lovely Reese Witherspoon has a movie out with familiar face Chris Pine (hot!) and newer face Tom Hardy (hotter!!). I went with a guy friend of mine and was surprised to find that he enjoyed it as much as I did! This movie has lots of laughs, gorgeous bodies, ritzy, colorful sets and sizzling fashion, not to mention some pricey wheels and explosions.

This Means Waris a story about FDR and Tuck, two CIA operatives and inseparable buddies who both happen to meet the same girl, Lauren. They agree to let her decide who she likes best and not get in each others’ way, but of course they can’t help using their federal resources to sabotage each others’ attempts to win her over. The CIA angle gives them a creepy opportunity to spy on Lauren and find out what she really thinks of them, and Lauren has the advantage of her guys realizing they have competition and stepping up their game.

Reese Witherspoon has always been a personal favorite of mine because she’s beautiful, talented and never in the news for barfing on a cop or dangling a kid upside down. She ROCKS in this movie as the successful, red-hot-in-heels and morally-conscious Lauren, trying to play the field like a guy but ultimately realizing the problems with being a player. Chris Pine (Just My Luck, Kirk in the new Star Trek) plays the tall, smooth-talking FDR, and Tom Hardy (might recognize him from Inception, your guy will know him from Band of Brothers) is the strong-but-sensitive family type (a girlfriend and I agree, we would pick him). Of course the whole situation is ridiculous and the characters are pretty much what you’d expect from a romantic comedy, but it’s a fun exploration of the perceived roles between girls and guys and how ultimately we’re not so different after all when it comes to matters of the heart.

While this movie isn’t too deep and the plot might leave a little to be desired, it’s a delightful, sexy romp and has a little something for everyone. If you’re broke like me and don’t have plans to drink out of a funnel on a beach for spring break (be safe, girls!), grab a friend or that cute someone in class you’ve been flirting with all winter and go see this movie!
