Awesome RSO: Drive Safe Kalamazoo

Monday, March 8, 2010

As a student at Western Michigan University it isn't unusual to find yourself in a situation where you thought you'd be spending a cozy night in and somehow end up crawling back to your bed at 3 a.m. after a long night of partying.

You know how it is. It's a Friday night. You've talked to everyone you know and there doesn't seem to be a lot going on so you rent your favorite movies and grab a pizza. You've just finished the last slice and your phone rings.

Your best friend has a few people coming over and invites you to stop by. You drive over and an hour later you're dancing, meeting new people, and having the time of your life.

A few hours later after a few too many drinks you realize it's time to head home. You check your wallet but you barely have enough for a Den pop let alone a cab ride. You think about making the walk back but it seems too far away. And don't even think about driving back!

The solution: Call Drive Safe Kalamazoo.

DSK is a popular Registered Student Organization (RSO) on campus that according to its' website, drivesafekalamazoo.com, helps to increase the safety of the community by providing a free, nonjudgmental safe-ride home for Western Michigan University students by Western Michigan University students on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 11 p.m. - 3 a.m.

Jenni Miller, 22, has used DSK a few different times. "Sometimes you get stuck at parties. People will volunteer to be the DD but you see them chugging beers across the room and you're like, 'great, guess I'm walking home tonight.' With the muggings on campus I don't feel safe to walk back so I always keep DSK in my cell phone in case something happens where I can't afford a cab ride or don't have any other alternatives."

Miller also admits that having student drivers can be more welcoming.

"They're always super nice and easy to get a hold of. Sometimes I prefer to take DSK compared to local cabs because the drivers aren't creepy and their vehicles don't look like rape vans," she said, laughing. "Seriously though, they're really great and treat you with respect."

Right now is a great time to get involved and DSK is currently looking for new members and holding new member meet and greets and a training session this week.

The next Meet and Greet/Group Interview Sessions are:

Tuesday March 9th at 7:00pm-8:30pm
and
Thursday March 11th at 7:00pm-8:30pm

After the Meet and Greet, you will then attend the Training Session, which is:

Sunday March 14th from 5:00pm-8:00pm (Free pizza for applicants!)

All room numbers are TBA but every event is in the Bernhard Center.

If you're interested in this opportuntity to get involved check out the event page on Facebook here or check out their site www.drivesafekalamazoo.com. If not, make sure to put their number in your phone in case you ever need a ride. (269) 345-0DSK

"DSK is one of the greatest RSO's on campus," Miller said. "DSK will save your life."
