Sometimes we just get to these parts of semester to where you feel like every step you take forwards becomes three you take back. You feel like you don’t want to keep doing work but you just can’t stop because you know the work needs to get done. If you need to take your mind off things like this, or have a homework break, there are many things you can do to fill the time before you have to head to class, before returning to the pile of work you have, or to just get out of the dorm. Whether you stay on campus or decide to venture off, getting out of your dorm is the first step.

1. Go for a walk – this seems like such a cliché, I know, but honestly, it helps. Being outside, able to breathe in fresh air, getting some exercise and your blood flowing, and having something to do with your time are all perks. Even if you don’t have a destination in mind, just start walking and see where your feet take you.

2. Go shopping – when you feel like you need to just go somewhere and you just have to get out, trying going to your favorite store. Even if you don’t have the money for buying things, window shopping is a good substitute, too. Shopping, even if it’s for something you need like groceries, is a good way to get you out of your dorm and doing something to break from work.

3. Go to the gym – sometimes when we need to feel better, it helps to work out. Do your thing at the gym, whether that’s weight lifting, cardio, yoga, swimming, or other types of sports. Spending a half hour or so working out is bound to relieve stress and could make you feel encouraged to get back to your work later.

4. Take yourself out to dinner – for real. In taking care of yourself, remember that you are your own best friend. And at the end of the day what really matters is that you take the time for self-care. Be your own date, buy yourself dinner (or swipe yourself into the dining hall), and nourish your body. Just take the time to make sure you are getting everything you need to be happy and healthy.

5. Go see a friend – if there’s someone on campus (or if you have a car and a friend close by), you could confide in or just talk to about anything, go see them. Even if you end up not talking about what’s going on with you, but your friend finds a way to cheer your up and make you see there’s more to life right now than tests and homework and papers.
