NHL Playoffs Update: May 6, 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

We are nearing the end of round two, and while the stakes are always high, additional hijinks and drama have made this round extra memorable. Let’s take a look at the action of the week.

Caps and Pens—Washington leads the series 3-2

A storied rivalry, everyone expected this series to be intense. Washington’s Tom Wilson delivered a high hit on Pittsburgh’s Zach Aston-Reese in Game 3 of the series, resulting in a concussion and broken jaw for Aston-Reese, and a three-game suspension for Wilson. Even without Wilson, the Caps managed to win Game 5 last night and take the series lead. Game 6 is Monday night in Pittsburgh.

Bruins and Lightning—Tampa Bay leads the series 3-1

Excluding some facial licking (but more on that later) Tampa has been dominating this series and has the opportunity to advance to the Eastern Conference Final this afternoon. But Brad Marchand isn’t going to let that stop him. After licking Leo Komarov in the first round, on Friday night, Marchand licked Tampa Bay’s Ryan Callahan. Marchand’s actions prompted the NHL to issue an official warning, telling him to stop licking his opponents. Only in hockey, am I right?

Knights and Sharks—Vegas leads the series 3-2

It seems like everyone is rooting for Vegas—a team that wasn’t a team this time last year. Their history making season could go even further tonight if the beat the Sharks and advance to the Western Conference Final. Game 6 is at 7:30 tonight on NBCSN.

Jet and Preds—Winnipeg leads the series 3-2

Nashville got a taste of post-season hockey last year, and Winnipeg wants that this year. Nashville has pulled out all of the stops—great plays, catfish, and Carrie Underwood—and are hoping that it’s enough to propel them to the Western Conference Final. Winnipeg has a chance to close out the series Monday at 9:30 on NBCSN.
