The Finer Side: Campus Golf

It was the fashion scene of the year. Blockbuster movies were represented. Outfits ranged from classy to trashy. Even the Olympics made an appearance. This is not the Academy Awards. It's even better. It's Campus Golf.

Kappa Delta's charity event Campus Golf has become the equivalent of a school holiday. And in addition to coming out for an afternoon of fun, and helping with a good cause, William and Mary gets to show just how creative we really are. This year, the costumes and fashions were a definite success.

To start, I must highlight my own team's theme. In honor of my roommate's engagement, we were "Team Bridal Party." And what a party it was. The Bride, Anna Jean, was resplendent as a "Redneck Bride": white sweatpants with "BRIDE" in red lettering on the backside, a white sweatshirt and white flip-flops were completed with a camouflage hat and veil. And her "bridesmaids" were just as classy. 80's bridesmaid Lydia demonstrated why puffy sleeves belong to a different decade! 90's bridesmaid Maura was a vision in orange-glowing fuchsia. And I, inspired by Katherine Heigl's 27 Dresses, and an LA native, shivered through the event as "LA Wedding" in a short dress, wood-stacked platforms, and lots of clear lip gloss.

Several of the year's blockbuster films served as the inspiration for other groups. Avatar led one team to cover themselves in bright blue body paint. According to some of the Kappa Delta sisters serving as caddies, Tim Burton's fantastical Alice in Wonderland was one of the more popular themes, with multiple groups dressing up as the crazy characters. One group was, cleverly, the characters from Up, with one girl dressed as "the House", with a cardboard box house and balloons.

There were also the usual costume themes, many representing the pervasive stereotypes of William and Mary. There were the preppy guys in pink polo shirts or jacket and ties; there were many groups of pirates; there were the cowboys, the guys dressed as girls, the 80s work-out girls, and the Jamaican Bobsled Cool Runnings team.

And here are my nods to the unique teams - Tetris, the Fem-bots, the Publisher's Clearing House team, and Team British (complete with Teacups, of course.) Thank you, Campus Golf, for bringing William and Mary such a wonderful holiday! ?
