How is the practice of yoga helpful to mental health?

Today more than ever, mental health is a public health issue. In my opinion, this is because people focus more time on the external aspects of their lives and insufficient time on the personal factors. Practicing yoga is a stepping-stone to finding this internal peace and greater mindfulness. The American Psychological Association defines mindfulness as a psychological state of awareness. Examples of reported positive effects of exercising mindfulness are reduced rumination, or constant thoughts of personal distress, improved cognitive flexibility and enhanced working memory capacity.

How can I get the most out of a yoga class?

First thing, come into class with an open mind. You will never grow if you do not try new things. Second, listen to your body throughout the entirety of the class. If a move does not feel right, stop doing it and try the modification of that exercise. For example, if you have back sensitivity issues, try half cobra instead of full cobra. Lastly, leave the baggage at home. Forget your surroundings and spend the class time reflecting on positive thoughts.

Namaste.
