If you check out Starbucks’ page, Jeffery fields, Starbucks vice president of Design & Content, says that the change in their cup is meant to “usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories.” What he means is that the bright and exciting red ombre they chose to decorate the cup with for this holiday season is meant to serve as a blank space or a drawing board for the stories of the world to be written in this holiday season.

Since around 1997, the different cups during this season have told a story of the holidays with reindeer, snowflakes, ski gear, and vintage ornaments, but this year, they have left the red background blank for the people of the world to share their stories. Two decades ago, the company started out with “1,400 stores in a handful of countries,” and it has grown to “22,000 stores in 68 markets around the world.” That means there are a lot of stories out there to be shared this holiday season.

The change in the cup isn’t a “political correctness” or really have anything to do with politics. The company has tried many different designs and this year they wanted to have something that “embraces the simplicity and quietness of [Starbucks] because it has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays.”

Instead of hating on a company and making outlandish allegations about their faith, we should keep this holiday season happy and understand that change happens. Embrace the change instead of throwing tantrums when something isn’t the way it used to be. Let’s all enjoy this holiday season, stay warm, and be thankful that we’re in a position to be able to afford the $5 coffee.
