Can You Make The Cut? – The Pros and Cons of a Pixie Cut

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

If you’ve talked to me for more than 30 minutes, you’re fully aware that I’m in the process of growing my hair out. I spend way too much time talking about it, and writing this article is only another step on the narcissistic path known as my life. It was a mere 21 months ago when I bravely cut my golden locks for a pixie cut in search of a sassy new style, and after 10 months of fun I began growing it out for probably the same reason I cut it in the first place: compulsive reinvention (hair is very helpful for this).

After a grueling stretch of awkward hair, I’ve finally settled back down into bob territory. However, since I’ve arrived at William and Mary, I’ve been fighting the impulse to cut it again. There are just too many girls with quality pixie cuts on this campus! I pass a girl with a pixie on my way to class and think, “She is so cool. I want to be cool like her.”

If you are having these same feelings, I offer you a few things to consider.

First things first, pixie cuts are awesome. However, there will be people who are confused by your short hair. This is irrelevant though, and should not be factored into the pixie cut decision-making process.

Secondly, yes, a pixie cut is easier to manage per se. There is no straightening, curling, pinning, or braiding involved. However, you no longer have the option to throw your hair up in a pony. Effort, although minimal, is required everyday. In addition, a pixie requires getting your hair cut more regularly. With the pixie, you’ve eliminated the annoying question, “What am I going to do with my hair today?” Possibly, you’re thinking you’ll get bored with the same do each day, but I found it to be a great opportunity to experiment with how I wore my makeup. Pixies are all about showing off the face!

If you’re feeling like mixing things up, or just have the urge to follow the super cool footsteps of Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, or one of the beautiful short-haired ladies of William and Mary, I say go for it! After all, it’s just hair.
