What to Wear: to an Internship & Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Internship interviews…oh boy. They’re dreaded, nerve-racking, and altogether fairly unpleasant. Internships are kind of important as they can really make or break your post-college career; therefore, you really need to nail that interview! Although you might have a really impressive resume that gets you in the door, the interviewer’s first impression of you when you walk through the door will set the stage for the next hour or so. You want to come off confident, in control, and ready to take on anything, so here are a few tricks to succeed in exuding just that impression:

Make sure your clothes fit you and flatter you; this will help you gain self-confidence. Keep in mind you will be sitting during this conversation, so make sure you can sit comfortably and still look polished.

Skirts and Dresses: Keep the length at or slightly above the knee. Any more than two inches above the knee has the potential for disaster. Pencil skirts and sheath dresses are always appropriate options.

Trousers: A nice trouser that fits you well can look very polished and chic. Make sure it’s flattering and not too tight in the derriere area! The length should be just hitting the top of your shoes and the back should be just above hitting the ground. Pants that are dragging on the ground look sloppy and unprofessional.

Shirts and Blouses: Both of these can be very professional if appropriately worn. Watch how high you button up a shirt, and make sure you stay professional. Also think about the possible gaps between the buttons when you are sitting that might be slightly revealing. The material is very important, as well. Do not wear a see-through shirt with just a bra underneath. Keep it classy. *IMPORTANT: If you tend to sweat when you are nervous, wear a shirt that it won’t be apparent on.

Blazers: It’s an easy way to look very classy and professional. It needs to be tailored and flattering. Also, it’s easy to take off if you are slightly overdressed.

Shoes: Closed-toe always. Both appropriate fancy flats and high heels are good options. Do not have a heel higher than 3 inches, because then your balance might be a little iffy and it could convey a less classy image. Make sure you can comfortably walk. Heels can also make long pants an appropriate length if you don’t want to get them tailored.

Accessories: Stick to one statement piece. If it’s a big necklace, take it easy on the bracelets and earrings. Your piece needs to be classy and tasteful. You should avoid lots of bulky bracelets and rings because those can get in the way of a handshake.

Colors: Although black is timeless and classy, you don’t have to stick with just that color. There are many flattering neutrals, and bright colors can also be worn as long as they’re tasteful. Patterns and prints can also be worn, but in moderation. Colors or prints worn the right way can exude confidence, so they should definitely be taken into consideration.

Hopefully these are helpful in your pursuit of the perfect internship! Remember overdressing is always better than underdressing, and ALWAYS keep it classy. Self-confidence is the main part, so if you have that, you can rock anything. Best of luck!!
